Ordered CZ PCR...ammo question

I'm a novice...but ordered a PCR that is arriving in a couple of days. (online from Damascus Gun Shop, $539)

Did a little research on ammo but I bought white box Winchester NATO 124gr Target for practice.  ($49.99 for 150)  Also bought Federal Premium 124gr HST JHP Personal Defense for SD.  ($29.99 for 20)   Any concerns with either of these choices?  I'm not experienced enough to experiment...I figure I'll pick 2 types and stick with them for now, 1 for practice, 1 for SD.

I'm registered for safety and permit to carry classes next week...looking forward to it.  I'm not necessarily planning on carrying.

First place to start is with this thread.

Although you can shoot high-powered ammo in your gun, a steady diet of it will shorten the life of the gun. I highly suggest you break the gun in with 200 rounds of whatever WalMart has on special. Anything except Remington UMC bulk pack will do.

I didn't realize Winchester NATO 124gr was considered high-powered.  I read somewhere in these forums to avoid 115gr ammo for this gun...any truth to that?

All ammo that is rated by a major organization has a maximum pressure spec.

Your CZ can fire all ammo rated by SAAMI and CIP safely, but the point made of higher pressure ammo wearing your gun faster is certainly valid. NATO ammo is limited to RN ball ammo and requires more pressure/velocity to be effective in a military scenario.

SAAMI standard ammo has a max pressure of about 35,000 psi. NATO ammo is rated at 36,500. SAAMI +P is rated at 38,500 psi. CIP rating is slightly below SAAMI.

There are many SD rounds available now that testing has shown to deliver adequate expansion without the additional pressure, so the question becomes why use 'more' if you don't have to.

Milder ammo will allow better accuracy in all cases particularly when related to follow up shots.

All this said, I don't think the number of rounds you currently have will significantly shorten the life of your pistol and I'd use them up. Simply consider the benefit/downside factor of your choices for the long haul.

Shoot what you bought without concern.

It's going to take north of 40,000 rounds before you need to start worrying about wear or parts breakage.

Thanks for all of the info.  I almost bought some CCI Blazer Brass 115gr that was on sale....the only reason I didn't was because of the 115gr.  Seems now that would have been a better choice than the Winchester NATO 124gr.

Most people, but not all, prefer the 124gr to the 115 gr bullets due to the fact the 124 gr feels a bit less snappy, and that based on barrel length and twist the 124 gr should be more accurate. Some people here have reported better results with 115gr.

There's no reason to avoid 115 gr bullets.

115gr "RN" target ammo from reputable manufacturers should run just fine for range practice and to break in your pistol.

Some have problems with the Remington UMC ammo.  Federal, Winchester,  Blazer (brass) and more should be great for getting used to your new pistol.
Wal-Mart or other stores with lower prices are good.

I have no problem shooting 115 grain ammo with my PCR or any gun I own. I also like the S&B or Herters (which is made by S&B). It is over 1200fps made for CZ.


Safety First
