Which handgun for CCW?
« on: September 20, 2018, 01:08:41 AM »
Eventually I'm going to take a CCW course and get a handgun to use strictly as a CCW gun.  I had a HK P30S I was going to use but I sold that.  When I do eventually get what will be my CCW I'm probably just going to get a CZ patterned gun.  In the woods when I am hunting I open carry my Witness Stock III in 10mm but it's a little too big to CC, as is my SP-01 Tac and all of my other handguns (all of my handguns are full size).  No stores around me really carry any CZs so it'd be hard for me to get a hold of one and feel it.

What I am considering are:

  • CZ P10C
  • CZ 75 Compact
  • CZ P01 Compact
  • CZ P07
  • Kriss Sphinx

I held a RAMI but I have big hands and it didn't feel comfortable to me so I am not considering that.

This is a question that really only you can answer. I carry a PCR and lately a Sig M11A1 has come on the scene. When attire limits the size and weight to a smaller gun I have a couple J-frames for that.
Opinions will abound here but Find what feels best to you and go with that.

Agree..Only you can decide. Personally, I really like my CZC 75 Compact.

Hi Zeebz,
Was your RAMI encounter with the 14-round extended magazine? I have size XL glove hands and find the extended mag RAMI unique in its ergonomic excellence, something that can't be said for the 10-round mag.

You'd likely have to wait a while to get a new CZ 2075 RAMI BD but I believe the wait to be well worth it, it's the fix for Buyer's Remorse.

You are correct in that the one I held was one with the 10 round magazine.  I didn't even know they made one with a 14 round extended magazine.  I may have to look into that now  :D

I absolutely love the looks, feel, portability, and accuracy of my 75 Compact and PCR. FWIW, I prefer carrying the Compact.

Good luck and enjoy the search :D

except in the less than free States, the 2075 RAMI comes with a flush-fit 10 round magazine and an extended 14 round magazine (actually a 75 Compact magazine with a sleeve)

I am quite content with my PCR.  I have a Ruger SP-101 DAO for backup.  Works for me.

Admittedly I don't own a RAMI, but if you're going to carry one with a 14 round mag (to get a comfortable grip) I don't understand why you wouldn't just carry a PCR or P-01... The weight difference is pretty much negligible and the longer barrel length is better for performance and doesn't really impact concealability.

I own/carry CZ75 Compacts, P01's and P07s.

My pistol has to be reliable, accurate, and feel good in my hand (for that kind of money, why carry a gun that doesn't feel right in your hand??)

The CZ75 Compact and P01 are about the same size.  The rail on the P01 means they use different holsters and you can put a light/laser on the P01 but not on the CZ75 Compact.

The CZ75 Compact has a thumb safety.  The P01 has a decocking lever - unless you buy a P01 Omega.  Those come with ambidextrous decocking levers but can be converted (by you) to ambidextrous thumb safeties, the parts come in a little bag right in the box with instructions for changing them out in the owner's manual.

I carry cocked and locked, so the P01 Omega was my P01 choice.

Some people notice the difference in weight betweeh the steel framed CZ75 Compact and the aluminum framed P01.  I don't.  Some people say the Compact has a lighter felt recoil than the P01 and it's due to the extra weight of the steel frame on the Compact.  Some poeple say the P01 is easier to carry all day because it's lighter due to the aluminum frame.

Both use the same magazines.

Magazines for the CZ75 Compact and P01 are about $10 cheaper each vs. the P07 magazines.

I have been concealed carrying a P07 for about 6 or 7 years.  Love it.  It is my out in public CCW pistol.

I was carrying a steel framed CZ75 Compact for about 2 years, around my property (yard, garage, back lot, etc.)  No issues with it.

I switched the around the property carry pistol to a P01 Omega back in the spring/summer.  Not due to weight but due to just loving the way that P01 feels in my hand.  It just really feels good (I can tell the difference between it and the CZ75 Compact) I think because of the grooves in the front/back of the frame.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Carry the largest handgun you can comfortably conceal
said either Jeff Cooper or Massad Ayoob.

One gun does not fit all.

In the winter, a full size pistol may work

Spring & fall, a compact

Summer, a subcompact.

I have comfortably carried, and successfully concealed a 1911, a Browning HP, a 226, a 75b, a Glock 17, a Sig 2022, a Glock 19, a Sig 225, a Glock 43, a Ruger LCP etc.

It's a personal choice but the PCR will have the same decocker trigger like your SP-01 Tactical, use the same mags (if it's 9mm) and you can sleeve a standard full size mag to get a standard grip length.

As was noted above, this is a question only you can answer, if you have a range that rents pistols, and they have any on your list, go rent one a d try it out.. Everything on your list is an excellant choice..

i have the p-07 and got a iwb holster for it, but it's just too big for me to carry around...  definitely in the winter under a jacket w an owb holster...   i carry an xd-e 9mm, apendix and i think it's comfy.
