Title: 7.62X39mm Hunting Ammo
Post by: CPTKILLER on November 15, 2018, 11:02:01 AM
I have questions on user experience with 7.62X39mm ammo.  I use Hornady Black 7.62X39mm 123 Gr SST.  What 7.62X39mm ammo works best on deer?  What are most shooters typical ranges on deer?

Interesting articles but it says little about performance on deer.

We can discuss reloads on deer later.

On a side note, I saw 4 big doe on a neighbor's property (I don't shoot across fence lines) and a small doe on my property.  Now they are are hiding here in Central Texas.

Depends.

You are asking a question to which the answer equates to a confession of at least a C-Misdemeanor in over 9 states.

Deer hunting with 7.62X39mm is perfectly legal in Texas.

That is my perspective.

However user experience and their comments with deer and big game hunting is quite limited.

As a general rule I don't trust gun writers.  Hunters tend to be more straight forward.

It's impossible to hunt deer legally with any centerfire rifle in my state.

I find that typical ranges in the lower Midwest and Midsouth are less than 200 yards.  I suppose that longer shots are available, but you can find deer grazing or watering well within 200 yards if you study their tendencies for a few days.  In my area, whitetail are as thick as flies, which may be due to the hunting restrictions.

I apologize if I seemed a bit @#$%y in my earlier post, but it's hard to get 7.62x39 data on whitetail, because it's illegal in so many states.  There are restrictions on centerfire rifles, magazines over five rounds, and 7.62x39 in particular.

Yet it's legal to hunt deer with any centerfire cartridge in my state.
