Title: Reaming Barrel to Allow Longer OAL
Post by: Smitty79 on November 20, 2018, 07:31:28 PM
I have 3 Shadow uppers.   The barrels in the first 2 run my Acme 147 FPs at 1.13 just fine with at least 15 mils of distance to the rifling.   For the most recent one, I'm in the rifling before the case hits the end of the chamber.   I went to the gunsmith to get the rifling moved back so I can shoot the ammo that works in every other 9mm I own.   He says that he can make the chamber longer but can't just ream the rifling back some and he's concerned about head space.   Also, it seams if he's moving the chamber length, not the rifling, I'm just going to exacerbate the bullet contacting the rifling before the case hits the end of the chamber.   What do I do?

If you don't have a headspace issue, then why lengthen the chamber?

I'd try a different smith.

Maybe CGW or CZ Custom can help.

It?s just reaming the leade. I?ve done it to my own barrel. Like mentioned, I?d reach out to the two major shops and see what they charge.

Just an idea, but have you considered buying a 9mm standard reamer and doing it yourself?   I think David at CGW told me once maybe 6 years ago I could do that myself.  I never did, but it is because the ammo I standardized on works fine with the CZ dimensions as they come from the factory.

How much shorter would you have to load for that barrel?

About .01. Would mean I would have to sort head stamps as CBC and a few others get thick too close to mouth of case and won't fit in chambers using 147 gn bullets.

So that would be a seating depth of .272 correct? I was just loading up some of these tonight, but my P10C will take them at 1.14. Shadow barrels aren't nitrided like Shadow 2's, so reaming shouldn't be a big deal if you're partial to this bullet profile.

I'd get rid of the odd-ball. Sell it with appropriate disclaimers.  Based on my experiences, you'll never be happy with it, no matter how much time, money, and effort spent.

I have 3 9mm 1911s, two DWs and a Nighthawk Falcon, and 4 CZs and have had the chambers on all the CZs reamed to match the chambers in my 1911s.  All will cycle my reloads, which are all between 1.15-1.16 OAL for both 125 and 147gr Coated Lead and 125gr Precision Delta HP.  I have them done by my FFL who also builds custom 1911s, including a lot of 9mms.  My last CZ purchased was a TSO and I took several of my reloads with me to pick up the pistol to have it reamed before I took it home.  He used two different reamers to get it to his liking and my reloads run perfectly.
Yes, it costs me about $40 per gun but with 7 9mms to feed, it is money well spent to know I can just load my ammo boxes from the bulk containers I keep everything in and know they will run in any 9mm I want to take to the range on a given day.

Similar to what CHBRAD said . . .  In addition to my three CZ 75s I have nine other 9mm pistols. I reamed my barrels myself so the handloads I use in all my other 9mm pistols also function in my CZs. I purchased my reamer from Manson reamers for about $40. It reams only the rifling to increase the leade. It has no effect on headspace.

He says that he can make the chamber longer but can't just ream the rifling back some and he's concerned about head space.

This is incorrect.  A finishing reamer will ream the rifling back and not move the headspacing step.  Find a new gunsmith.

I'm one of the guys who encourages people NOT to do this, but if you want to, there are a couple of places that get recommended at Benos all the time.  One of them may be "Patriot" but not sure.  I'm sure some forum searches would turn something up fairly quickly.   For me, if I were ever inclined to do it, I'd be tempted to buy my own finisher.

Highly recommend Patriot Defense. Send them your barrel to have it reamed. They?re based in Houston, Tx, Kemah to be exact.

Patriot Defense

That is the one I often see.

I push tested every 9mm barrel I own. I'm sending the 2 shortest off for reaming. The short Shadow barrel won't run the bullets I want with several, otherwise, good head stamps.

I don't know if I would return to that smith if he does understand chamber and leade are two different things.

I've used Patriot Defense three times for barrel reaming and been very pleased with them.

I have reamed every cz that i own that is not nitride. I no longer own any nitride cz barrels.
I have never seen any accuracy changes.
It is simple and don't have to sweat any little oal change.
I started this years ago in my competition guns and will never go back.

Personally, I just load shorter as necessary or find a bullet that I can load long.
