Title: Sights for every EDC over rated?
Post by: CrazyDave on January 11, 2019, 11:57:05 AM
I see, even on my bedside, weird apparatuses attached to firearms.  Ya ever just think, if I ever had to use this, I wouldn't even need the sights?!

Nope.  Someday, it might not be enough to hit "someplace" on a target.

I might need to hit a very precise place on a target.

Not using the sights is one thing.

Not having sights is something completely different.

For quick target acquisition in a reaslistic SD scenario, I really appreciate having a highly visible front sight in particular. I may not be taking the time to fully line up my sights in such a scenario, but in a quickly-evolving situation in what could be marginal light conditions, I think a high viz front sight is a very good thing.

As for other "apparatus," I'm not sure what you are referring to - a WML? If so, then again, it seems like a perfectly good option to have, imo.

Trijicon HD.  They are wonderful for seeing sights.

No, sights aren't overrated, but I also think that lasers are under-rated.  Irons are faster than almost any other option but require both appropriate contrast and the ability to properly bring the sights in line with the eye.

Personally, I'd rather have a laser than tritium front sight for EDC, but YMMV.
Now ideally, I'd have both, but if forced to pick one, it'd be the laser.  Most incidents happen in low light to dark environs where lasers excel relative to irons.  Yes, weapon lights are great but only really required for offensive use or defense of others, than self defense IMO (all of my home defense handguns have lights! -- different requirements than EDC).  Rear sights, tritium isn't required but generally does help.  Relying on tritium rather than sharp edges of irons does detrimentally affect precision most of the time.

Generally in my carry guns, it seems to go (and I up my firearm depending on extent of anticipated threat, anticipated distance from rifles in truck or home, etc):
.22: irons (generally don't carry for self defense, but rather for varmint reasons on the farm/ranch, the minimum gun I carry)
.380: grip laser and fixed irons
9mm compact: light and either grip laser or tritium front sights
9mm full size: light, grip or undermounted laser, and tritium front sights

In central TX, there's only a need for a jacket 4 months out of the year and rarely the need for proper winter coats and according clothing, so calibers larger than 9mm (with modern sd projectiles) are ballistically unnecessary and much more difficult to conceal vs colder environments.

And I almost always have a light on me in addition to the firearm.

I went browsing and it looks like all the Crimson Trace brand grip lasers for the pcr are discontinued.

A good visible front sight or if you prefer a laser for quick point and shoot if the situation arises but in most defensive situations you are instinctive and won't have the time to align sights .

You will shoot the way you train. If you practice instinctive/point shooting you'll revert to that. If you train acquiring the sights that's what you'll revert to.

I don?t think good sights are over-rated, in fact I think a set that you can see well and get dialed in are essential.

What I do think are over emphasized are night sights.

To properly align sights with your eye, you need to be able to bring your arms to near full extension.  That's not always an option, especially in a self defense mugging, ambush, grappling, arms reach standoff, etc, situation...  In those type of situations where quite literally shooting from the hip by necessity, a pistol grip laser is tremendously helpful for optimal shot placement--shot placement being critical for pistol bullets to quickly stop threats.  Again, I think lasers are under-rated, in particularly as an alternative to iron sights in scenarios where iron sights cannot be used.

Tritium sights are great insofar as they increase visibility under low light and most also have paint, etc, high-visibility modifications in addition to just the tritium.  So when looking at iron sights upgrades tritium absolutely wins over brass inserts, luminescent paint, florescent paint, etc.

I like the factory sights on my PCR. But I think I'm the only one that does, [emoji16]. I know a lot of people like the "ledge" that comes on aftermarket sights, in case they have to use a belt or something else to rack the gun. But I like how low profile the stock sights are precisely because they won't snag on anything during the draw.

Video of techniques taught by Craig Douglass in his Extreme Close Quarters Concepts class.   I believe Craig's class is considered the "gold standard" for civilian close quarters technique.   Craig has John on his sights at about 3 yards.

Agreed.  I posted this after a 30 foot drill with a friend.  Being no longer military, LEO  (never was), or anything but a semi-retired civilian......I can't imagine having to defend myself from more than 30'.  At this distance I think "point and click"  is perfectly adequate and natural.  If folks used small reactive targets and chased them down while firing, most would be pleased at how well they'd do I think.(safety first) Most folks don't have a place to shoot "combat style" or are too hung up on the latest, greatest night sights, or whatever.

Does "defensive" mean you wait for the other guy to shoot at you first?  You wait for the bad guy to point the gun at you first?  You wait for the bad guy to shoot someone else first?  You wait....for what?

I have a hard time taking the WPS guy seriously -- sounds just like Zach Galifianakis...

Regardless, Douglass' elbow shield is a pretty brilliant technique.
