I've noted some folks on the forum say they have had breakage issues dry firing DA / SA CZs with snap caps, and instead use an o-ring.
Any opinions on this and/or recommendations for o-rings?

O rings are cheaper than snap caps. Also, not all snap caps are created equal. Bought some from eBay that were out of spec, wouldn't even chamber properly.

Hiya Baconandbeer and thanks for your thread. I've used the brand A-Zoom in .380,9mm,and 12ga with zero issues. The dry firing didn't become fun until I came across the Laser-Lyte Laser and bought the 9mm cartridge,extra batteries and extra rubber bottom parts as spares. Coupled with 3inch stickers that are made for laser training. It was fun to practice in the living room etc. during commercials and such. Be well.

I double wrap when I dry fire. O ring and snap cap.

Don?t DA (except maybe 1st. shot)
Just pull to the wall, that is it for each shot.

It is my opinion that if you plan on doing allot of dry fire the first move is to replace the Firing Pin Retaining Pin. After that the other protection options are less crucial. I still use an O ring because it stops the Firing Pin from being struck all together but i consider this overkill for normal dry fire practice. To some degree it may depend on the FP that you have installed, the hammer spring weight and the number of dry fire cycles.
I gave up on snap caps for dry fire a while back due to the way that they wear out over time and shed material. I still find them useful for trouble shooting.
Any O ring that resembles this should do the job. Note how the O ring sits on both sides of the FP so when the hammer drops it hits the O ring and transfers into the slide rather than the FP. I have heard #83 O ring thrown around the forums but i can not confirm this from personal experience, i just eyeball them.

Take a foam ear plug and slice off an 1/8" medallion. Wedge it behind the firing pin block and dry fire away.

Thanks folks, I'll try out the foam.
I bought some #83s (likely saw the same thread) but I find they are a bit too big and have a tendency to fly out--don't think it should make a difference, but I'm using a compact steel frame P01.
I'll pick up some snap caps too but yeah I have experienced the same shedding while practicing with other guns, this P01 is my baby so I am feeling extra cautious!

I have read about this as a training tool. What manufacturer and model did you buy? Also did you run into any problems with the O ring? I would like to do much more dry fire practice but I am concerned about the firing pin getting damaged.

iTargetPro is a good laser trainer. I fired at least 400x on my 9mm CZs and no issue at all.
Eventually, batteries and rubber cap on the laser cartridge will need to be replaced.

Another option for dryfiring in SA is to put an o-ring in the ejection port, just holding the slide slight out of battery.
That way, the hammer doesn't fall and no worries about damaging firing pin.

Dry firing isn't a problem for CZ firing pin. The issue is actually factory firing pin retaining roll pin. I just replace this roll pin with stronger ones made by Cajun Gun Works.

Don?t forget the trigger return spring is also prone to failure, supposedly from dry firing in DA. However CZ is now including an updated TRS that may prove to be more reliable in time

I have dry fired my SP01 as much as I live shoot it (close to 9000 rounds).
I used an o-ring and snap caps for 5 minutes and removed them. I never went back to them again.
I had zero breakage of any kind. No trigger return spring and no firing pin. I just replaced the firing roll pin at about 500 rounds and still have the same one to this day.
But it seams that all CZ are not made the same as some people have issues.

I used a foam ear plug for probably 5000 pulls on my P-01 (*Cajunized*) and also did it on my new Phantom.
Trigger spring went south after 3000 pulls on the Phantom even with the plug installed.
P-01 didn't flinch.
I have a new Shadow 2 coming to me in a week and it'll be dry fired with the foam plug in place to be sure.
Range report coming right up.

I dry fired mine with a laser insert with my target system. I thought all was good - until I went to install a short reset trigger system from Cajun. The original firing pin retaining rollpin was all but destroyed and eaten up in the center. I put the new Cajun one in, but will see if I can get an O-ring to work with the laser insert.

Personally, I prefer snap caps and dummy rounds that are drastically different in appearance from live ammo.

I agree. I just take an orange paint pen to mine and they are easy to distinguish from live rounds, but I still find them very useful for training or malfunction drills and they last a long time for dry fire practice.

My sp01 tactical has a few hundred rounds down range but maybe 300 dryfires if I were to take a guess..when I installed my cgw pro package, I drove out that firing pin roll pin and it was pretty messed up..I had even broke it down when new to clean up everything and the pin was fine so you really do need the ring as some have suggested not needing it...

Same thing with my factory pin in SP-01. The factory one is made of soft steel. But the included roll pin that comes with CGW pro-package extened firing pin is harden steel so it should be able to withstand numerous dry firing sessions.
