Hey all! I'm looking at picking up a new compact. And I'm kinda torn between the PCR and the P-01. I'm leaning towards the P-01 for the rail, since I sometimes use a Mantis X. And of course I'd have the ability to mount whatever else instead.
But I'm pretty sure that the stock trigger pull will need work. Since I've shot my buddy's 75 compact, and I thought it needed a little help. I'm guessing that a P-01 would be similar. So it got me to looking at CGW kits, as well as models that come with the kit already installed. Then at the CZ custom models. It looks like the custom vs. CGW guns are similar in price. And it also looks like similar upgrades. Is there a clear difference, between the two? With the custom, you get a model no. that clearly identifies that gun as having those features. That should mean quite a bit of difference in resale. OTOH the CGW upgrades, while proven to be good, probably aren't going to add as much in direct resale value.
Of course there's a lot to be said for buying the base model, and adding the features that I want. I'd guess that's what most people do, and it's typically what I do as well. But in this instance, it's more about internal parts, and possibly sights, all of which can get pricey pretty quick. So it looks like after the price of the gun, plus buying, and installing parts, vs. just buying it already done. It just seems like it's a wash, and it's hard to see any gains made, using one over the other. Any input that would be helpful in making this choice, would certainly be appreciated.
If I've placed this in the wrong place, the moderator should please feel free to move it.

Both shops are very high quality. You won't go wrong with either one.

As a third option you might want to try CJ Maven.
He does great work as well and has an excellent turn around time.
I have guns done by all 3 of them and all are equally wonderful.

Might be the way to go. Since after I've looked a little deeper into prices. It looks like the custom P01 is way more than customizing a stock pistol.
It seems that my original statement holds close to correct for the PCR. But for the P01... Not so much. $1300.00 is a bit much for me to spend on a sd pistol. Not because my life isn't worth it. But a similar functioning gun can be made from an off the shelf p01. And the holster wear will be much easier to look at.

I think if you’re concerned with re-sale, having upgrades done by CZC or CGW will command a higher price than DIY with the same parts. Just because of the provenance of who did the work and the reps both shops have.
If you’re handy, and want to spread the cost out more, DIY is a good option and sometimes more satisfying knowing that you did it yourself. Also more cool points with your shooting buddy’s when you tell them “I did the trigger myself”.

I agree with the above. The other benefit to doing it yourself is that you can pick the parts you want from both shops.

I'd be confident enough to do a remove & replace, as long as no special tools are needed. Polishing parts would need a very specific instructional video. But overall, I get to know all my guns inside and out if possible. Some are more complex than others, and that sometimes creates issues like needing special tools. It really doesn't seem like it's worth the money to buy a tool that's only used once. Sight pushers come to mind.

One mans not worth it is another mans gotta have...….
for me needing a specific tool and not having it so I just can't do what I need too, even if it is only very rarely makes buying most tools very sensible.
Most gun related tools come to mind if you own and shoot with any frequency. Unless your buddy has one then go buy one he doesn't so you can reciprocate when you borrow his.
Also having an expert do the work is worth it too me because I am very good at maintaining but those guys are experts at what they do for a reason. Just my perspective though. Gunsmiths are a profession for a reason. Guys like me being the biggest one. Time is more valuable then the 100 bucks I would save.

You’re gonna need a set of punches and lots of patience. There are several picture tutorial of how to detail strip a 75B or SP-01 on this forum. I’ve also seen a video on YouTube for detail stripping a 75B and JoeL on this forum has excellent videos on the P-09!
But, I’ve not seen any on PCR or P-01 specifically and no polishing videos. I’ve done a P-09 myself and that makes me appreciate the professionals so much more. The pin on the trigger bar was not fun to get out.

So true! Like having a famous painter’s work hanging on the wall, at the same time you frame your child’s drawing when she was 4 ... One will fetch $$$ when resold, but both are very meaningful to you.

I have had three guns done by Cajun. A 75, a Shadow 2, and a 97B. I did not start shooting till I was over 50 and I am not the most mechanically inclined person, (thought I can save you a ton on your taxes). The service that I got from Cajun and the way they treated me and helped me understand my options went far beyond my expectations. Their work was impeccable and the guns they did were a joy to shoot. In my opinion you won't go wrong having them do work for you.

Thanks for the input guys. While I feel confident in my ability to do the work. I believe that the resale value, as well as the quality of the work would benefit from the pros doing the job. Heavy emphasis on the quality. Smoothing parts is a delicate job to do properly, and easily overdone.
As far as buying tools. I've been guilty of buying tools that are rarely used. But it's typically to save on an expensive job, by doing it myself. Using the sight pusher example, those things don't work on every model. Each one will do a few models. And having sights installed is extremely cheap. It's the sights themselves that are expensive. I do however own specific punches, and screwdrivers used for smithing. But a jig for smoothing a specific revolver sear? That's something I'd leave to the pros also. But I certainly take you guys point about tools. I have practically every mechanic tool there is lol.

I thoroughly enjoy doing the work myself after buying upgrade parts from both Custom and Cajun. I am not concerned with resale because I will not ever sell any of them. I will have to leave detailed information about each firearm - to help my children sell them if they don’t want them after I am gone.

I can not say enough for the quality parts, labor and personnel that Cajun offers. They did a P-01 Pro Package for me, I bought the pro package kit and did my PCR and I also did my brothers P-01 with their defensive carry package. They are great shooters, I can't wait to get a Rami done by them.

The CGW website describes the P-01 Omega with their installed Pro kit converts it to a "world class" handgun. In my estimation, this is an accurate statement.

Anyone have a recent experience with the turnaround time at CGW?
-
In Feb, CGW quoted 2-4 weeks wait time until I could ship, then 8-10 for the work. I ended up sending that pistol to CZC, and had it back before CGW notified me that I could ship my pistol in if I wanted.
I could not be more pleased with the work CZC did. Side by side comparison, I believe the trigger feel is a hair better with czc. Blasphemous I know.
For home gunsmithing, I think CGW is the way to go. Their kits are completely idiot (me) proof.
It is great to have two solid options. Take your pick and you will be more than happy with either.

I wasn't going to have my PCR worked on but because a little arthritis in my trigger finger, I know, decided to do it. I chose CGW since I have a 97b e that is very very nice. The time I was given is a 6 week wait and 10 week turn around. I'm going for the pro package and the Dawson night sights.
Edit: time and money aren't as important to me as the finished product so that might need to be considered in your decision. Best of luck with your endeavor whatever path you choose.
