Title: Picture size
Post by: david s on November 05, 2019, 05:24:23 PM
Idiot question, how do you get the photos to up load at an appropriate size? When I up load a photo from imgur to here with out any modification it's huge. When I use the imgur "medium thumbnail" it's to small to show detail. I've loaded one other photo on the RFC site in the test section straight from imgur and there the photo shows up correctly proportioned.

I change the resolution/size in Photoshop. Windows Paint has the ability to set resolution as well. I typically size to no greater than a 950 width for forums, the height is less important due to the ability to scroll.

You can specify any size with setting width and height in pixels for your picture in script without changing it's real size

Just add ?width=xxx&height=xxx parameter at the end of your link.

For example:

[ IMG ] …….?width=100&height=100[ /IMG ] will look like:

[ IMG ] …….?width=300&height=300[ /IMG ] will look like:

if you have a windows machine, try emailing the photos to yourself.  i forget what email program, but some will ask if you want to reduce size.

if you are using a phone and want an app, there are picture resizing apps.  i use one called "photo & resized" app.  there are others so if you dont like 1 you can find another.

You can edit it in imgur too

When I first loaded the photos into my computer I cropped the photos to try and eliminate all the excess surrounds with Windows. Then I moved them to imgur. I experimented by posting a picture on RFC in there Test Section straight from imgur and it loaded at a reasonable size. I tried posting here and missed on the first couple of tries. On what I think was the third attempt at posting the photo here I hit the "Preview" and actually saw the picture but it was huge. I went back to imgur and tried "medium thumbnail" and this was to small when posted. I'm going to keep being Goldielocks and continue to search for "just right" but this may take awhile.

That is how I do it.

In imgur.....
Scroll to the pic you want & click the pencil icon, then scroll up and click the edit button.
On the right side of pic window, you can type in/change the size you want (I typically change just the first size number, the second number changes automatically maintaining the same ratio of the original). Hit save.

folks, there's no need to resize pictures - just edit picture link as shown below. The source of both pictures is the same, but they displayed differently with width and height specified.

Went to imgur used double-d's pencil icon thing because I could find it and then used Tok36 950 width and tried three photos again. I think I forgot to hit "save" on the second photo and messed it up. The other two came out pretty close. Not exactly there yet but at least I've made it to the ball park.

Just add (a space then width=some value after the g and before the ] in the first [ IMG ]
Looks like this [ IMg width=950]blahblahblah.jpg[ IMG ]
You'll have to fine your value
Some are less, some are more
Each picture may be a different value
I use 950 a lot, but some pics vary
I try to find the value that fills the page

So [ IMg width=950]https://i.imgur.com/dU7orRs.jpg[ IMG }, comes out like this:

• In my experience, most of our readers can't see a full photo when it's Width is greater than 600. I typically set Width to 500. Den's photo above just irks me because I don't have time to scroll right, then scroll back up to see the entire photo... I want to see the photo in it's entirety.

• You really don't need the Height command. If you'll use only the Width command, then Height and Width will be linked so that the photo is proportionally scaled when reduced.

• When I crop or scale in Imgur, the photo doesn't want to be hosted. And it's not just this forum, but true of several sites. It's easier to simply post the big photo (using IMGUR's "BBCODE"), paste it into my post here, and THEN manually add the Width command before publishing my post. Examples...

From Imgur.... [img]123xyz...
Edited post..... [img width=550]123xyz...

I resize in MS Paint if I need to.

You can hold on the photo and open in a new tab to see the whole picture.

Copy your imgur photo url and then add an "l" or "m" at the end of the filename.

Quote
Here is the list of all the modifiers for dimensions (not all are always available) :

s = Small Square (90×90) as seen in the example above
b = Big Square (160×160)
t = Small Thumbnail (160×160)
m = Medium Thumbnail (320×320)
l = Large Thumbnail (640×640)
h = Huge Thumbnail (1024×1024)

As an experiment I tried setting a set of photos to 500 and posting. Does compressing a photo cause distortion in a digital format? And a second question, when transferring pictures from imagur to the other web site do pictures get lost in the shuffle? Say I pull 3 photos from imagur and get the IMG width XXXXXXXXXXX line in the new site for each picture. But when the post is actually posted only one or two pictures show up. Am I doing something else wrong or are they just not showing up? I believe Wobbly addressed this some what. Thanks once again, David

Jpeg/jpgs can get wonky depending on what you're doing.  You can do whatever you need to w/ PNGs without issue.  So first convert your jpgs to pngs before resizing.

I use Pixlr Express online to change the size of any photo before uploading to Imgur.
