Is there any interest in AR 80% lower builds?
I would like to get going on a couple next year as a family project and share as we go here.

I've toyed with the idea many times, mainly because I like making things I can use, and not because of the whole "secret gun" thing. I wven went so far as to purchase a nice cross slide vise and a few other tools for the purpose. But in the end I just can't justify the price for the 80% lower, jigs, mills, etc. when I can buy a completed Anderson lower for $45 otd just down the road from me. Maybe someday.

I know what you mean.
little back ground on this, we have a son in the USMC. He went in out of high school and
will be home soon. His Grandfather wanted to do this project with him but passed away.
So, to honor the old man and teach some power tool skills to the young man I want to take this on.
Sounds like fun?

Even for those of us who won't be starting with an 80% (or the 0% lower like I have - https://www.dsarms.com/p-14036-dsa-ar15-lower-receiver-forging-7075t6-alloy-mil-spec-completely-unmachined.aspx ), it will be interesting to read how it goes.
Anyone who doesn't care can just skip the thread and read something else.

Sounds like all the right reasons to me. Congrats on raising a Marine, hope y'all enjoy the project and his homecoming. Keep us posted.

Well, that's the perfect reason to do it! Let us know how it goes.
And BTW, if you don't want to paint it, the EPI products are a great way to finish it. I purchased a trial kit to do one (which I never have made), but have used it on other projects with great success.

The old Grandfather left us an unused drill press, a router and a couple of vices.
I've used a router professionally, so I feel good using fixtures and jigs.
Just which jig to get? One with FC holes on both sides is good stuff!

Hi,
Don't try and do this without a vise of some sort and a way to clamp the vise securely. I used the Universal Drill Press Jig 80% AR-15 Lower Jig from 80% Arms and a mini mill. It worked adequately although I think it should be designed differently.
