Title: CZ P07 Duty double feed/failure to extract
Post by: CZJunkie0929 on December 25, 2019, 02:55:48 PM
Good afternoon to all! About a week ago I picked up my very first CZ. It’s my P07 duty. After getting it home, going to the range, and getting a few pew’s down the tube, I have been having 2-3 FTE’s and double feeds every mag. With that said I went home and threw some snap caps in all of my mags. With that said, I noticed even with snap caps I’m getting double feeds and failure to extracts. What could be causing this to happen? I want to use this as my EDC but with this reliability it’s very concerning. Thanks! I will attach pics as a reference.

New one? Contact CZ USA support... Not worthy to fight with options if the firearm is on warranty.

It’s the duty version. So first gen. I bought it used and already contacted them. They said warranty isn’t transferable. I’d have to pay so I’m trying to figure it out before I go spending a bunch of money.

It may be worthwhile to inspect and detail clean the extractor with some solvent and a pick/probe. Make sure that the extractor claw is intact. This being a used pistol, if this dose not remedy the issue i would replace the extractor spring.

I am also interested to hear the input of other forum members on your issue.

I will have to do that. I’ll try and take the extractor out and clean behind it. But another thing I observed is on my snap caps, there are long, deep gouges where it looks like the bottom of the slide is dragging on them. With that said, to me it may seem plausible that when the slide is running forward to push the round in the mag, it’s also dragging the round underneath somewhat out of the mag, towards the feed ramp, thus where I get the double feed almost.

Good advice Tok36.
Since it's used weapon, I'd go further and make complete disassemble and cleaning. Then replace every single spring for a new one.

Make sure there's a small bevel on the lead edge of the center rail.  That will stop the lower round from being pushed forward and interfering with the extraction and feeding.

I thought I read somewhere that If you “polished” that center slide rail on the underside (that touches the rounds) it would stop the premature stripping of the second round. I’m gonna try that. I’ll probably file it slowly and recheck.

Any time I have issues with a used gun, going back to the ‘as delivered’ condition is the best first action.  You don’t know if the previous owner had tried to lighten the springs or if they may be tired.  In addition to refreshing all of the gun springs with factory new, I’d also recommend doing the same for the mag springs.  I like to go with the extra power Wolff mag springs.  Give the mags a good cleaning when cleaning the gun.  With all new springs and a good cleaning and lube, it will be like a new gun again.

The 9mm P07s are not known for having issues.  My early P07 Duty in 9mm has been one of the most reliable handguns I own.  I’m having trouble remembering it ever having an issue and it’s north of 2k through it since I bought it used.

Yes polish the firing pin Channel rail
that rubs on the next round to be chambered from the mag. Using a sharpening stone round off the Leading Edge of the rail and polish it.

Thank you very much for the help! I’ll take care of this tonight and hopefully it helps!

The early serial A prefix P-07 DUTY models were a train wreck and had multiple issues including the infamous frame bulge. My early P-07 DUTY had the bulge but operated just fine through 630 rounds at which time the trigger went dead. CZ replaced ALOT of those early guns.

Mine unfortunately is a serial prefix “A”. I didn’t know these had this many issues or that there was even a gen 2, until I picked this one up. With that said, I’m getting so many different responses about what will be the fix (which I know no one can indefinitely tell me over the inter webs) but it seems like the most common was to bevel/polish the center slide rail that contacts the rounds in the magazine. I may try this with a file. I’m unable to get ahold of CZ too so this definitely puts me in a bad spot.

Watch some videos on slide disassembly.

Order a Wolff Extra Power Extractor spring.  Wolff Gun Springs:  https://www.gunsprings.com/

When you get it:

Take the extractor out.  Meticulously clean the whole channel.  I would also carefully polish the extractor behind the claw with 1500 or 2000 paper.  Polish the 'bolt' face where the round meets.  600-1500-2000. (Yes, doing the 'rail' that strips rounds helps in other ways).  I then use a felt wheel on it.  If you polish it where the round enters the underside of the extractor, the rounds will now slip in even if they are too large and out of spec (which can happen).

Clean all thoroughly and reinstall with new spring.

MOST CZ problems are from a dirty channel and/or extractor spring.  It used to happen occasionally on 75s.

I would replace the extractor and spring and start with that.

As stated by a few others here, break the corner on the bottom of the slide where it picks up the next round.  If that leading edge is sharp, it can contribute to the problem you're having.
I have two P-07s.  The first one was oversprung on the recoil spring.  I was having the same problem you are having.  My P-09 ran flawlessly.  I noticed sided by side that my P-09 racked noticeably easier.

Some may recommend against this but I ground the small retainer off the end of the recoil spring assembly so I could remove the recoil spring and cut about 1/2" off of it.  I think I removed a little more after some additional trial and error and ended up removing about 5/8" total.  It's run flawlessly ever since.
Based on the problems you're having with it, I would guess that the gun hasn't seen a lot of rounds down the pipe.  If it's had this problem since new, the previous owner likely got frustrated with it and didn't end up shooting it much.
I really think breaking the pickup edge of the slide and lightening the recoil spring will solve your problems.  Please let us know what you find.  These older guns are still good guns, you just have to work out a few bugs.  Don't give up yet!!

Double Feed?

Magazine lips have opened a bit allowing the second cartridge to escape.

^^I'd start with the magizine(s). Buy/borrow a new one and see if the symptom persists.

If the mags are for .40 and the gun is 9mm this would be a likely symptom.

It's unlikely, but since it's used, it's possible.

I'd definitely find a way to rule out magizines before I started working on the gun.
