Title: Hollow Point Too Short?
Post by: Cz75COMPACT on March 23, 2020, 12:31:10 PM
Hello All,

I am posting again with another question regarding my new CZ75 Compact. Given the events of late and the fact that I only had FMJ range ammunition, I scoured my town to find some hollow point defensive bullets. I ended up with OPS 85 grain hollow point frangible bullets as they were the only ones I could find.

I immediately encountered an issue with this ammunition. It doesn't want to smoothly feed into the chamber. When I rack the slide its almost like the bullets feel like they're catching on something but eventually fall in place. Once they are in the chamber, they rattle around. There seems to be a lot of space for the bullet to be rattling around in there which I have not experienced with any FMJ ammunition I have used. That seems like it would present a problem when trying to fire them... Maybe not?

I have not shot any of these hollow points as I was only able to get one box of them. What's the deal?? Are the bullets just too short? Are they safe to rely on? Will I have feeding issues when actually firing them?

Any experience of knowledge appreciated.

Thanks in advance and I hope everyone is safe and prepared facing these unprecedented times.

Sorry all I figured it out!

They were rattling in the magazine and not in the chamber.

The rough feeding is still kind of concerning.

I have the rattling issue with a SIG P320 in 40s&w...
Not all guns like all ammunition. If you're having a tough time feeding those (my opinion) carry the FMJ until you find a hollow point your CZ likes.

Yeah these rounds are going to be a big NOPE.. they do not feed and eject properly at all. So glad I did this test or I'd be walking around with them..  >:(

My standard SD round in 9mm has been the 124 gr. Gold Dot.  Was also using GD's in my .45's, but have just switched to HST's in my Sig P220, they're just a little more accurate.  Based on what you wrote first, I was really wondering if you'd gotten some .380's somehow  :o.  As far as the rattle, my Sig does that, too, kind of irritating, and might be reason enough to switch back to GD's, I don't remember it doing it with those.  Could be a mag issue, too, guess I need to do some checking.  Later, and good luck.

Have you actually fired any of them? If not you have not done a conclusive test. I will not carry any round of any kind that I have not personally vetted in what ever gun it's to be used in. I know defensive ammo is expensive but you need to fire at least 2 full mags AT LEAST that without issue before putting it in a possible life saving role.

Personally, If only a choice between an 85 grain pill (especially frangible) and FMJ 115gr or heavier,  I'm choosing FMJ!

I'm a believer of standard pressure 147gr for penetration and expansion, like HST.  My CZs shoot the tightest groups with 124gr ammo.  124gr stuff also performs well in FBI penetration tests.  HST, Gold Dots, Ranger T; all good to go.

I still have a partial box of (I think) 90 grain non toxic crap, just to check the outer bounds of functionality/reliability testing.  Made a mistake when originally purchased them, I don't think I'd ever buy anything less than 115gr for 9mm again and if 124 gr is available, nix the 115.

YMMV and I'm sure the speed freaks will pipe up to the contrary!

Whatever you do, you owe yourself to make sure your SD fodder feeds, ejects and goes bang.  If a new gun go ahead and break it in with target stuff, clean wipe dry and finally test out your SD stuff for reliability.
