Title: Bipod and sandbag vs. accuracy

Yes, it depends heavily on the type of bipod/sandbag you are using. F-class bipod and tactical bipod are two different animals. However, taking into account your personal experience, what would be your answer to that?

I will have to test that next time I bring rifles with bipods to the range.

With my .30-06, the bipod only helped accuracy when installed so that it folds forward to open. The non-locking Harris bipod would move too much under recoil. The rifle's accuracy was confirmed that day when I removed the bipod and used the range bags instead.

I only have experience with a Harris bipod on a .308, but it has been good.  If I get behind the gun correctly, pull in to my shoulder correctly, and then put some forward pressure on the bipod, it seems to work perfectly.  It will jump if my position behind the gun is off.

fwiw,

your results may also have to do how well your gun was worked on or not.  Or if there is any pressure applied to your barrel once its set down on the stock or bi-pod.

you need to do your due diligence on several things before you can get to that stage.

Question is too open ended with not enough variables defined: is this static shooting, weight of the gun, muzzle break used, field or competition???



For ME, non-competition shooting:
If sighting in a new scope, sights or testing new ammo I use bags front and rear. IMO it eliminates some variables. If I had a heavy rifle rest I’d probably use that. In practice I use bipods on just about all my rifles. No deer is going to wait for the bearers to set up sandbags! If a rifle/bipod is setup and used correctly it shoots as good as bags for practical use.

I use a bipod with rear bag, and am happy with the results.

Sling and leaning how to "build" a good sling supported firing position.

You'd be amazed at how well you can shoot a rifle prone, or sitting, once you learn to set the sling up and use it properly.

I have bipods on several rifles.  But none I'd grab and carry out the door in a hurry.

When home this weekend with a rifle that only had a sling on it.
