Well let me clarify - a new HD project, but definitely not a new shotgun. Over the last couple of years I've had an 870 tac, Mossy 500 and a couple others, but none really met what I was looking for. What I really wanted was something old school. Since a Winchester '97 was over my budget, I started keeping an eye out for a vintage Stevens 520. I finally located the perfect candidate back in early March - a last model double hump (1938-'39) in really nice condition, except for a dent in the barrel 2" down from the muzzle. And dirt cheap too!
First thing I did was order the correct bayonet mount / heatshield from East Taylor Co. and commenced to doing a little cutting, filing, stock cleanup and accessorizing. The heatshield finally arrived last week so I gave it a couple cycles of rust bluing (didn't want it to look too new or pretty) and finished it up. Not too bad for an 80+ year old gun.

A classic done right, very nice.

looks good

Handsome old gent you got there.

With 5 in the tube and six on the stock the 'ol girl weighs almost 10 lb.s, so recoil with 00 buck really isn't bad. It's much more pleasant to shoot than the plastic stock guns!

Very nicely done. I have been finding lately that my love for wood and steel is creeping back up again. Really wishing I had more fine weapons like your shotgun in the safe.

Coolest shotgun I’ve seen in a while!

Thanks for the compliments!
The other day a guy at work was going on and on about his tacticool Charles Daly shotgun. I pulled up a pic of the 520 and showed it to him, He got real quiet, real fast, and I haven't heard another word from him about it.

Nice! Speaking of such projects and speaking of 1897s, I have just that project started.

NOW THAT is a nice shotgun! Very well done.
I also wanted a Winchester 97 but couldn't bring myself to the costs - etc. I appreciate your post about the Stevens 520 - this might be a project for myself down the road. Thank you very much!
I ended up going with a Winchester 1300 defender I found at a Pawn shop locally that had cracked plastic furniture I got for just over 200 bucks. Ordered a NOS stock and used handguard...

Nice 1300!
Unfortunately, the 520s have been "discovered" in recent years and have gone up substantially in price. They were made to be a working man's gun and, as such, were used as a tool and not something to shoot skeet with at the club once a month. Finding one in decent shape can be a challenge.
