Title: tso failure to extract
Post by: midaltantic44 on September 13, 2020, 06:44:27 PM
My .40 s&w has suddenly experienced erratic failure to extract.

I replaced the extractor and extractor spring - the old extractor looked a bit worn - yet twice today at a match had same experience. The round fires, the slide recoils, but does not extract the spent case, so the pistol jams as it tries to load a fresh cartridge while the spent one is still in the barrel. If I drop the magazine and work the slide the spent round will then extract.

Any suggestions?

How many rounds have your put through the pistols barrel? Has this malfunction occurred with multiple types of ammunition? Is it possible that the barrels chamber has become rough?

An extra power Extractor Spring may be an option, but i am interested to hear the input of other forum members on the malfunction.

about 10,000 rounds. Range brass, so that could be an issue. The chamber question is a good one. I have some brasso metal polish. Thoughts on using that?

If range brass.  Change to new or once fire.
If you have the cases that failed, measure the case rim. Bet they are undersize.

I had issues with acme bullets at 0.401" OD. went to 0.400" blues and problem went away.
also there are like 3 size of extractors.. could be a 9mm extractor trying to grab a 40 case.

Range brass can have issues but I’ve been using it all along w no problems till last two matches....so I figure something has changed.
Polished the chamber. And ordered an extra strength spring. So we’ll see.

Polished chamber w brasso. had another fte on a different magazine. Because it was practice I could have the casing. Didn't see anything on it to give pause, but anyone have any thoughts what to look for. However, as I said, it has about 10,000 rounds thru and never did this before. waiting on extra power extractor spring

The spring is easy to switch out and should help as long as the extractor is not cracked or chipped.
Look it over carefully when you have it out to re spring it.

Best of luck
