The Savage is in the safe, scope and bipod moved to a brand new MTR. Zeroed the MTR quickly at 100 yards and then shot 10 five shot groups at a little over an inch, in a hurry, and after a dentist appointment. SK Rifle Match for now. Got home, ran two wet and two dry patches then the borescope, all looked excellent. Unscrewed the action and adjusted the trigger pull down to 2lb-11 oz from 3lb-2 oz, checked torque of action screws and sight and sight rail, cased it up ready for some slower paced and potentially more serious group shooting on Friday.
This is my first CZ rimfire rifle, and it is elegant to say the least. Very well constructed and a beautiful stock. The Savage seems and feels rather unrefined compared to the CZ. I was late ordering some 10 round magazines, but they are on the way.
I am one happy camper. Video Friday if everything goes as currently planned.

Sounds like there's some potential in your MTR. Be interesting when you get some serious time with it.

Congrats Joe, the MTR is a beautiful rifle. Unfortunate about the Savage, but life is too short to shoot guns that don't love you back.

Good shooting! Welcome to the CZ rimfire club. You have peaked my interest into shooting 22 lr at 100 +yards. I might have to try it.

Today's session was pretty darn good, for me, at least. I am very confident I can improve on this, at least learn to become more consistent.

If you improve much on 5/8" at 100 your going to make the rest of us jealous. That's a nice looking set up you have there.
-
Thanks, David. What I would really be happy to be able to do is shoot 10 groups in a row with all of them under 1". It is the variation in the groups that I need to improve on. Today was pretty good, with an average still just a little over an inch, but no terrible groups. I just need to work on it, just like I had to do with the pistols.

Nice shooting!
Love my MTR, even though at this point it's just been a backyard session to get things on paper, and that didnt take long! I've got a 20MOA rail with a Leupold VX3i 6.5x20 so definitely planning on some 100 yard sessions.

One of the problems I've had to work on is deciding if it's the rifle/ammo combination or my shooting. Larger number of shoot groups will answer some of this but some times the variable is the day I'm having. Bad day, bad groups, good day and a remarkable improvement in the groups. It can be humbling knowing it's me.

Joe, the MTR is a really beautiful rifle. I have looked at one in a local gun store a few times. Why I haven't bought it is because of the other CZ rifles I keep looking at in another store.
Great shooting!
-
david s--Exactly! Mental attitude is a big factor in single hand shooting with the pistols as well, and that is where I have all of my experience. I'm also working out the best aim point for me to use. I'm thinking a 3/4"-1" red dot sticky on yellow paper for the black cross hairs in my scope. The black X worked pretty well. The circles are too small.
It is little things like the target contrast, parallax, focus, ocular, eye relief that I need to try to optimize for me. The trigger pull is least of my concerns right now. Seat height, rear bag height, bipod pivot tension, lots of little things.
The rifle bore cleans up pretty well with just two wet then two dry patches if I only shoot two boxes of ammo. That is another big difference between the Savage and the CZ. And the action is located in the stock with a metal bar embedded in the beautiful stock.

Joe L Great rifle. Just got mine a week ago but have not got to range. Scope mounted. QUESTION: What brand/Model Bi Pod did you install and do you like it for bench shooting as this is all I will do with my MTR.

JB--the bipod shown in the photo is the one from my Savage. I got a 6-9" Harris with a pivot that I installed on Friday after getting home from the range. Same as one shown in the photo except for the pivot. The new one is identical to what I have on my Savage Model 10 .308 bolt rifle. Works fine on a bench, maybe a little tall to be honest. I have a short squeeze bag and have to add a 2x4 spacer. I also got a tension lever to adjust the tension on the pivot bolt easily. It replaces the thumb nut that comes on the Harris bipod.

I say you put a red dot on it, Shoot it at 400 yards, And clean it twice as often as you do the Kadet. ;)

Now there is an idea! :) :)

I go to shoot the MTR again on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and here is a video of this morning's session. It was very windy on Tuesday, so I didn't have much to show for it, although I did get some experience holding in to the wind at 100 yards. Today was much calmer. Tried some Federal Premium Target but switched back to the SK Rifle Match after 20 rounds. Tried one more rapid 10 shot sequence with poor results, but had some good 10 shot groups when I slowed down and got nearly everything right.

The rifle is very consistent after maybe 3 rounds through a clean cold bore. I'm not even sure that is the rifle, might be me settling down. I just need to continue shooting it. Maybe try some Eley ammo later this Fall.
Will try it at 200 yards next week in New Mexico.

Got to shot mine yesterday and continued to be impressed. Shot off a bench using a bipod and a bag that wasn’t a great height but I made it work. I still need to adjust the trigger.
Best 5 shot group at 100 using SK target ammo.

No matter how good the rifle or shooter are, you have rimfire ammo. I know some rimfire ammo is better than others.
I just keep remembering an article I read about a new .17 rimfire rifle some company came out with a couple years ago. My youngest son wanted one real bad until he'd read up on it more. The end of all that was the reports that said no matter how well made/consistent the rifle was, it was limited by the quality/consistency of the ammo available for that caliber/rifle at the time. They were hoping some other companies would start making/loading it and competition would improve the consistency.
Anyone spending time running rimfire ammo through a chronograph to see how their rifle's best ammo compares to other ammo they've shot through it?

It's not uncommon for a clean bore to put it's first few shots in a different target location before it settles down after a few shots and starts printing groups. You may not like this suggestion but after your next outing leave the bore dirty, then the next time you go shooting see if the if the rifle begins with fliers or begins printing groups right off the bat. It may very well begin printing groups right away with a previously fouled bore. It looks like you and your MTR are getting along any ways.
-
DavidS -- Thanks for the suggestion. For this last video, I started the day with a clean bore and the Federal Premium ammo, which doesn't have much wax on it. After the 20 rounds, I didn't touch the bore, and switched to the SK Rifle Match. I think the bore may settled after less than 10 shots. The problem with concluding this is that I was mentally still a little ticked off that the Federal was so bad, so it may have just been me throwing the first few shots until I settled down, not the bore!
So far, it seems the MTR only throws one or two shots out of the first 10, clean bore or dirty, warm or hot, but I still haven't concluded it isn't just me. The difference between me doing things right mentally versus some complacency is evident in targets 9 and 10 in the latest video above.
Now the Savage would throw shots 4" in any direction for 30 rounds before it settled down to 2" groups. That was terribly frustrating. The MTR is definitely tolerable cold and clean as well as cold and dirty.
Now that I am in a humid climate and have seen the pitting in my P-09 barrels from not cleaning regularly, I am much more careful to run a few patches then an oiled one in all of the barrels after getting home, just to minimize the chance of pitting the new "good" barrels. I'm also very wary of any carbon ring in the chamber area. That was another real problem with the Savage. The MTR cleans up very quickly after a 100 rounds or so, compared to the Savage, one or two wet and 2-4 dry patches, then a very light oil patch, done.

Have you used any type of polish or wax on the stock? Looks to be a much deeper brown that on the one I just picked up. She’s looker and a shooter!

That's how I clean my match 22s that shot regularly, minus oiled patch at the end since its dry in CA. Ones or twice a year. Or just a tight dry patch on pull-trough. I also rarely change ammo for the gun wherefore no need for re-seasoning the bore between the matches.

No, haven't used anything on the stock. Photo may be slightly underexposed, making the stock look a little darker than actual. It is pretty, however.
