Title: 1/10 Joe L. Distance
Post by: Steve Menegon on January 05, 2021, 01:22:06 PM
I took my 97BD out to shoot a little and test various Wolff recoil springs. My original spring felt weak from the day I picked it up. Spent shells were spitting out a pretty good distance. I tried 18lb. & 20lb. 20 works great. 12 rounds through 10 yard distance off hand.  Pulled that upper right one.  Focus Steve...

Pic of steel fun in between 7 & 10 yard and 20 & 25 yard. I hit the 50 once. Missed one of the close up stuff. Shot 6 rounds at 50. I swore I hit the support ring twice. 12 rounds at the steel plated close up. Fun to shoot different target each shot.

Raggety looking target is a no-look to see how far my shell casings were flying. Still not too bad!

I really like shooting the 97 with the 20lb recoil spring. The new Talon tape on the front and backstrap provides outstanding grip. It is chilly currently @ 37° so evaluating when my hands are sweaty comes later this year.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210105/aa87496e1986352d37e7a0d5aab2d525.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210105/633a04af2e4573219e3bd8095b46d386.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210105/5532b81fa9d2c3c07694b53984819016.jpg)

Glad to hear that the 97 is tuning up nice. I may need to adopt your Joe L fractional scale.

10 yards = 1/10 Joe L's, 25 yards = 1/4 Joe L's, 50 yards = 1/2 Joe L's, 100 yards = 1.0 Joe L's.  ;D Funny stuff.

Thanks! It felt great to finally get out again after finding "reasonably" priced ammo.

Tok,

The 97 is just about perfect in my eyes. The D/A trigger is the smoothest of my CZ trio. The trio are all close and very nice, but each a bit different. They all have their own character.

I may bump up the S/A pull. I have it at 2lb. 10oz. The 85 combat trigger is way better feeling than the one I modified. I carry this from time to time. A bump may be smart.

"I practiced from a 2/5 Joe L. distance". Yes, the fractional aspect will work. Has a nice ring to it! [emoji16]

Steve--looks great!  Glad you are enjoying your 97.

I'm using a 135 PF load but I think I have an 18 lb recoil spring in mine, but I'm not timing followup shots or anything like that, so I tend to run as stiff a recoil spring as I can and still eject OK, which is 3 or 4 feet.  It's good for lockup consistency but would probably make the muzzle dip too low for rapid followup shots.

I struggled single hand standing on steel last week in the mountains of New Mexico.  I think I hit a steel at 100 yards maybe twice out of 10 shots.  I'm out of practice shooting bullseye style.  I could probably hit 12"x12" steel OK at 50 yards single hand standing maybe 1/2 of the shots, don't know.  Regular paper bullseye target at 50 yards is what I need to practice.  Wrist rest is easy compared to standing single hand, that's for sure.

I shot my Kadet at 100 yards on Tuesday from a wrist rest and that went well.  I may try it at 50 a few times before wasting any expensive .45 ammo at 50!
