Title: CZ 83 Trigger guard wont move out or down
Post by: mascootz on March 02, 2021, 03:32:25 PM
Hi CZ friends. Can anyone tell me how to fix my CZ 83 with a square trigger guard that won't move down to allow me to remove the slide.  I'm a big fella and it just won't move but a small amount. I have had it open several times to clean it and oil it, but ever since it's not working.  I have read others' posts on the method to try to pull the trigger guard out and then down, this no longer works. Is there anything I can do?

I've had similar issues with mine.  I've never found a good repeatable technique to get it open.
It could be related to the phases of the moon.

It came apart easy when I first got it, but the more I used it the tighter it seemed to get.

I'd be interested in others comments on the subject.

just to make sure - you did remove the mag first? The trigger guard can't move when there is a mag in place.

I happened to be back home where I could go to find my CZ83 and try and get the trigger guard down.
Over the last 2 days, i was able to do it twice in about 100 tries (it really does a number on your hands!).

I put a dab of CGW Super Slick Slide Grease in the two apertures on front and back of the trigger guard...it didn't help.  :-[

I then put a few drops of Hoppes No. 9 in the gap that is there when it is closed.  No luck after than either.

After I get finally get it open again, I'm going to do a disasembly and see it there is someplace on the metal-to-metal fit-up that I can worry with a stone to make it easier.

I'll keep everyone posted.
It might be a while since I have to keep working.  ::)

Update:  There isn't any place on a normal field strip that you can stone to adjust the fit tolerance, with the exception of the sides of the trigger guard where it goes up into the frame.

My CZ82 showed a lot of wear inside the frame at those locations, but you won't be able to stone or polish until you take the trigger guard out.

My CZ83 has a good bit of side-to-side slack, so I don't think doing anything in those locations would help.

My future plan is to knock out the roll pins and to gain access and be able to make adjustments.
I don't have any pin removal tools so I'll have to wait for the next gun show to be able to pick up what I need.

Until then, I found the best opening method for me at least, which still takes a bit of effort but seems to work:

1. With mag removed and slide locked back, grab the gun grip "upside down" in your left hand with the barrel pointing up your left leg.

2. Holding the gun firmly against your leg with your left arm straight, put two fingers of your right hand inside the trigger guard.

3. Keeping your back straight (this is important!), with your right hand, pull up-and-right firmly until the trigger guard snaps into the open position.

Let me know how this technique works for you.

The "grip" as describe in previous post.

Have owned an 83 in the past.  Never had that level of difficulty.  My issue was that when firing it the trigger guard would bite me.  If I shot it more than a couple of mags I would be bleeding.  Never could figure it out. Honed and radius all the edges in the area, even used rubber tape at one point.  Wound up selling it to my boss as he did not have the issue and at 25 m it would keep everything in the black.  Wish I could find one in 32.

Good luck and sorry you are having such problems.

An update...

After finding an exploded parts view of the CZ 82/83, it appears that the BEST way to get the trigger guard to drop down to complete the field strip is to pull the top end of the trigger guard forward as hard as you can, then it will swing down.

It makes sense after seeing how the connection is made internally.
