Title: Recommended mods for CZ 97B
Post by: Roscoe2212 on June 25, 2021, 09:17:29 PM
I have a new one on order and wanted to get it redone with target sights and a good trigger job.
I would really appreciate the veterans in the group to advise what mods are in order for a dedicated
bullseye shooter who is decrepit, has poor eyesight, and usually shoots indoors.  Also does not
have any current interest in getting a red dot thingy.  I will NOT be doing the mods meself. 8)

I believe that you have come to the right place. I look forward to other forum members input on the subject.

For bullseye competition or just target shooting?

just target shooting.  Way too old for competition.  I still have my best targets from 25 years ago.
I doubt if I could duplicate them from half the distance.

Never too old for competition!  You may not make Master Class but who cares.  My trigger needed a little work to clean up some creep.  Also would recommend Bomar Style adjustable sights.  As you will need to maintain a constant sight picture even though your loads may change.

Good luck on your project.

My 97B needed a little love as far as the trigger goes. The barrel bushing got a little sloppy so I had CZC put in a ACCU bushing at the same time MY GO TO is CZC, but CGW would also be a good choice.

Send to CGW and tell them about how you like the trigger as far as pull weight.  They can install their sear and hammer combination and that will fix the trigger.  That is the minimum I would do.

After that, depends on what you would like.  The pistol can be converted to single action only, add rubber grips, different sights, etc.  Then the last major modification which I highly recommend for anyone that has shot bullseye is a bushing upgrade.  CGW calls this the "E" bushing, which is a 1911 style bushing hand fitted to the slide and barrel.  I just bought a package deal from CGW when I bought my 97, which made it a 97B"E" in CGW terms.  I've shot many local bullseye matches with that pistol in centerfire and won my fair share.  It has been flawless.  As you have seen above, reports on the CZCustom modified pistols are excellent as well.

I have a few 97B"E" videos at bullseye 25 and 50 yard distances and at 100 yards here.  https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7GbOFIiTV0wwMk4-4SokhrBLpz9ckRcz (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7GbOFIiTV0wwMk4-4SokhrBLpz9ckRcz)
I prefer the 97B"E" to any custom 1911 because it fits my hands so well with very little work.

Yep, the E job sounds like the top of the mountain, just $655 for it seems maybe overkill for my needs.  I am currently leaning toward having CZ shop do some mods just short of a bushing, I have contacted them and they are
exchanging emails, so I will let everybody know their opinion (for my case only). 8)

Ok, finally decided to go with the E package and upgrade the sights.
I know some think the E is overkill with iron sights, and they may be right, but I have about six or seven
pistols I shoot from time to time, and the switch from Red dot to iron and back is a bit intimidating.
that, and of course if I am seduced by the red dot optical sights, I haven't spent much for iron on the E. 8)

Roscoe....... A tip for shooting iron sights with older eyes.  As we age, we cannot focus on the irons like when we were in our 20’s.  That is the sad simple truth!  Get with an optometrist, and get him to give you a prescription for an arms length focal point. You want your focus sharp on an object at arms length just like your front sight would be.  My eye doctor knows I am a shooter and has an extension gizmo that is set up at the exact distance from my nose to where my front sight would be.  Then we go through the drill on what lens is the sharpest.  You will get a pair of shooting glasses, that while the target is somewhat blurred, that front sight will be razor sharp.  In shooting bullseye precision pistol with iron sights, it is all about centering that front sight within the rear blade.

One reason we older shooters like the red dots is that our tired ass eyes only have to focus in one focal plane.  We then only have to concentrate on our area of wobble.  That is another issue altogether.

There are probably better options, but I sent my 97B to CGW for their "E" conversion.  I'm not a bullseye shooter, but I like 1911s and thought the 1911 style bushing to be a better design.  A big part of the conversion was improving the trigger.  It is so much better, in both DA and SA.  The feel of the SA trigger is not quite a 1911 trigger but it's about as close as it can be.  I also had CGW install an adjustable rear sight, an extended thumb safety and a stainless steel guide rod while they had the gun.  Again, I don't know if those are the best mods but I can say my 97B makes me smile every time I shoot it.

Remove the firing pin blocker, put on stock rubber grips, disassemble and polish trigger group and parts associated with it… when you are in there file the hammer hooks down just a tad over 1/3 and you will have a wonderful trigger, watch out, they are soft as tin.

If you have no idea how to do it, just dont, get one you trust to do it….i am a toolmaker so it was pretty easy done 😊
