Title: Hello…otherwise titled “What in the hell did I buy today?”
Post by: Leigion on August 14, 2021, 11:26:57 PM
Hello, LEO from the backwoods of Oklahoma here!  I have never purchased a CZ before.  I used to run a Sig 229 Legion as my duty weapon.  Once OHP switched to the Sig P320, I tried it and tried to love it as a Sig fan, but it was too light for me personally, similar to a Glock.  Once the 320 X5 Legion came out and between the frame and the tungsten powder mixed with the polymer, I was hooked.  I now run the X5 Legion as my primary duty weapon.  However, as a smaller framed female, it’s impossible for me to carry that concealed in any fashion.  Went to the gun store with the hope of finding something for conceal carry that was a little more discreet.  We get such a good deal on Glocks blue label we went to that section first.  My husband carries a Glock and will not carry anything else.  I hated the feel of everything I tried.  The weight and balance feels off, especially when I’m used to the heft of something closer to 4 pounds.  I think I tried darn near everything in the store.  The salesman said, hang on, I want you to try this one we have on consignment.  Okaaaaaay.  He hands over a compact 9mm I’ve never seen before much less handled.  It’s a CZ.  It hits my hand and I’m floored.  It not only feels good, it feels perfect.  Fits my hand, the weight, everything was just in that sweet spot.  The trigger pull was something out of a dream.  And then I saw the price tag.  Holy cats they were proud of it!  But we came home and I couldn’t get over the feel of it.  I told my husband I had to have it—even though it was a staggering amount of money for me.  So I went back today and bought it but I did try some of the less expensive CZs they had in the same/similar size range.  Nothing felt as good as the first one I tried.  They told me they thought it was a specialty piece (I’m sure the trigger has had work) but they couldn’t tell me exactly what but said they thought it had been discontinued.  The price is what it is, a lot for me, but if it’s something I’m comfortable with and will utilize on the range I have no qualms about the money even if I doubtless overpaid.

That being said, what in the heck did I get myself into today?!?! I have the original case that has a large orange sticker on the side that says czcustom.com.  Pistol is marked CZ 75 D compact—orange sticker denotes CZ Compact SDP 9mm.  There are other stickers on the case partially worn off, what’s remaining on one says D RAIL with additional numbers.  Thoughts?

The 75D Compact is CZs steel frame compact. Very similar to the PCR but the latter has an alloy frame. CZ Custom is a one of the big names in custom work for CZ. I'm not real familiar with CZ Custom's compact jobs but it sounds like it has some of their fine action work.

The 75D Compact is a stellar pistol. Form and function, even stock. Like you found it, it literally feels as if it was molded to your hand. It's very reliable and super accurate. The weight of it makes the gun shoot pretty darn flat for a compact. I can imagine that with an action job from CZC, it's a nearly perfect pistol.

I think you did well. Congrats and enjoy it!

By the way, I'm also a huge fan of the 320 X5 Legion. I shoot it in USPSA competitions. It's the only gun I have found that I like as much as my full size competition CZ pistols.

The CZ Compact SDP 9mm, is a factory custom CZ P-01. The CZ P-01 is a alloy framed compact CZ 75 variant with a tac rail. CZ Custom Shop is a CZ tuning shop in Arizona that dose some of CZs factory custom pistols. CZ Customs has a sub forum here.

Let it be know that CZs can have different slide markings on the same models at times. What you have is a CZ P-01 that has custom work done to it.

Gratz on your new CZ and welcome to the forums!

I’m the only officer I know running one as a duty weapon.  Most everyone uses Glock.  It’s ridiculous how huge that X5 looks in my hand but it’s beautiful to shoot.  My husband being a Glock fan calls it a g—d—n cannon.  But it’s what feels comfortable to me.  Glock is nice, but it feels like a plastic toy gun in my hand and I just can’t get comfortable with it.

As for this CZ, I’m in love with it. I put a few rounds through it after we got home and it’s interesting to see the difference in my normal patterning. The sights are different for me—I’m not used to that type of vertical alignment but I’m looking forward to getting more comfortable with it.

Not redundant. Accurate. I didn't know it was the P-01 frame. Good info.

I think I will call them on Monday and see what info they have on it.  No one I know has a CZ.  We’re all LEOs and no one carries much beyond Glock in varying sizes.

Welcome aboard from the NJ Shore, and congrats on the new pistol !
"It hits my hand, and I'm floored"  is exactly the way I felt even though mine was a rental P09 ! Also tried a P01 and P07 and grouped best with the 09, but ultimately chose the P07. I'm an old geezer with arthritis and some nerve damage to my hand, so liked the balance of the P07 best. It's as comfortable for me now as my 1911s were in my youth.
Don't know why, but it seems like not too many folk around here are familiar with CZs either, and the only other CZ owner I've met at three ranges nearby is my Wife ! She liked my P07 enough to buy her own a year later. I was surprised because she seemed to be very comfortable with our daughter's Sig 229.

Welcome to the Forum.  You picked a great pistol.  My wife loves her P-01 and I am quite fond of my 75 Compact in 40.  Both shoot great and make us look like much better shooters than we are.

Best wishes with your new purchase.

Congrats and welcome to the CZ family. The compact CZs are superb guns, the best mix of capacity, ergos, accuracy, reliability and safety currently available IMO. You chose well.

Most cops aren't really very interested in their duty guns (or other guns).  BTDT many years ago.  Some of the guys I worked with every day never went to the range with the three of us that shot regularly.  I saw them come in the office with their revolvers locked up from lack of use/lubrication.  Open their dump pouches (yeah, it was a long time ago, but even then speed loaders/pouches were available) and have to shake them to get the grimy, corroded ammo out of the leather pouches.  I've hear them bounce their revolvers off the wall, filing cabinet and desk before the gun hit the floor when it came off their finger while trying to spin it around and holster it like they do on westerns.

Same for the military.  Most of the guys I was in the Army with fired a gun a couple times a year when we had to qualify.  Very few of us practiced regularly or otherwise looked for opportunities to shoot more often.

CZs are nice pistols.  Out of the box they're more accurate than most others.  With some work like yours has they are one of the smoothest, too.

As a female, it’s a little different for me.  Qualifications are not competitions, but I am competitive.  I shot SASS for a short time, and am usually one of the few women out there qualifying.  I went to academy with a couple of females that couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.  It’s embarrassing to be on the line with anyone that qualifies in the 30s much less another woman that uses that as an excuse.  And failing to qualify with a shotgun?!?!  Put in the time if you know you’re that deficient.

In today’s time, my duty weapon may be the only thing I have to save my life.  I work in a rural area and back up can easily be 20-30 minutes away.  With an adrenaline dump, most people’s shooting averages drop by half.  So if Im qualifying with a 100, now I’m down to 50.  Add to that most people don’t qualify with all their gear, or in inclement weather, or at night.  Now you’re probably in the 20-30 range…and you may not go home at the end of your shift.

I showed this CZ to a couple of people that flipped out that I spent 900 on a gun for conceal carry.  If I don’t like it in my hand, I’ll never take it out at the range, which means no proficiency with it should I ever need it.  Is that really worth the savings?  Nope.

Used to irritate me when people would ask me to recommend a "good cheap gun" for self defense.

All I could do was ask them what their life was worth.  Some of them didn't get it and I'd have to explain the cost of the gun is nothing to worry about if it saves your life or the life of a family member.

I carry a P07 .40.  One of the most accurate pistols I've ever fired.  It was around $400 new 9 or 10 years ago when I bought it.  Then I had it milled for an RMR and bought a DI (dual illuminated) RMR for it and sent the slide/RMR off to be set up.  The RMR cost more than the P07.  The milling and cerakote refinish job on the slide cost just over half what the pistol cost.  So I ended up with a little over $1,000 in it.   Well worth it if I ever need it.  After all, how much is your life worth?

Just for info, all my CZ 9MM pistols (P07, P09, P01 Omegas) shoot that cheap Federal Champion 115 grain FMJ range ammo very well.  Stuff shoots good in the M&P Shield 9MM pistols, too.  If no one has mentioned it earlier, most people say 124 grain hollow points shoot very well in their CZ 9MM pistols.  Sooner or later I'll get a good 124 grain load worked up for mine.  So far the 115 grain hollow points (reloads) have shined in mine.

Great find for sure. Glad that fine CZ went to a good home and someone who will appreciate and shoot it! What part of Oklahoma do you work in? I live in SE Texas, but my wifes family is from the Lawton (and other small towns around there) area. So, you work for OHP? They went with the P320? Have there been any issues with them? I know there has been several reports of LEOs having discharges and getting injured with the P320. They are not very well thought of over on Pistol Forum. I was all in on the P320 a couple years back. Had a Fullsize Tac Ops 9mm, Sub Comp 9mm, Compact 9 and X- Carry. I decided I prefered DA/SA though and let them all go except for an M17.

Looks to me that Standard P-01 prices are creeping up to the $700 mark so it sounds to me like you got a great deal on a tuned pistol.  I'll be happy to take it off your hands if you ever get tired of it, but it doesn't sound like you will.  Enjoy your new purchase, I know I would for sure!

I always find it interesting when officers can carry a gun of his/her choice.  Its great to be able to carry what you feel most comfortable with, but I can imagine that in some instances, a particular officer might choose something that is totally out of left field.  I'm not sure if a Tac Sport Orange would be the greatest choice in a duty role, for example.  As far as the CZ Compacts, I absolutely love them.  Thank you for your service, hope your CZ serves you well!

I catch flack for the X5 Legion, but since OHP switched to the 320 I get less than you’d think.  Everyone runs Glock even if it’s not their weapon of choice because in a firefight someone can just throw a mag to someone else.  Where I work its predominantly without back up most of the time, they’re 20 minutes out minimum.  I carry a mag in my duty weapon, two in my belt, and three on my vest.  If I need more than that, I’m using the wrong weapon.

The very excuse the Chief used to justify buying new 686's for us so many years ago.  So everyone could share ammo is someone else ran out.  I laughed at him and told him fat chance of that.

I was the only one in the department that expended the money/effort to buy additional speed loaders to carry extra ammo.  And my partner was a guy who would buy a new revolver, buy a 20 round box of ammo for it, go to the range, shoot 14 rounds without even hitting the 4 ft. by 4 ft. backer the targest were stapled to, pul the last six rounds in the revolver and head back to the office to start his shift.  I watched him do that one day.

He was also the guy that would run a car down and when it stopped pull up beside of it so close I couldn't get my door open.  I had to crawl out the driver's door to get out of that car and he couldn't get the guy out of the car anyway because our front fender was inches away from the other car's door.

Yup, got some stories, but all in the past.  If you go through all the ammo you carried and haven't ended the fight you need to either carry more ammo or hit what you're shooting at.

If feeling like that made me an a hole then I'm still an a hole.

I believe the CZ Custom SDP when new cost around $1400. They are out of production and have a following, so used ones are in demand. If you got yours in excellent condition, then I think you got a great deal, especially for buying from a shop.

My friend had that same SDP. Internally it was great, but externally, it had a fair amount of holster & carry wear and worst of all, the areas around frame pins had a lot of heavy scratches & scarring from someone w/ unsteady hands working on the gun. Still, my friend had no trouble selling his for $875. Posted & sold it in one day.

I don't know if a Glock mag will work in a P320, but in a pinch, a P320 mag will work in a Glock, as long as the mag is long enough to fully insert up the mag well. You can see at 10:40 in the YT link below.

Maybe you can try a Glock mag in your X5 to see if it works and get back to us?

Congratulations! The SDP is as good as it gets.

If it makes you feel any better, there's an SDP on Gunbroker.com  right now with a starting auction price of $1,799.99...  Yes, really.

Truly, you did well.

FYI, today CZ compacts come with 15 rd mags.  Not sure if yours came with 14 rd or 15 rd mags.  Regardless, when you stock up, get the 15 rd mags.  Mecgar is the OEM for CZ mags and more affordable than CZ branded mags.

Congrats on very nice gun!
There is version of the same gun without rail and less sophisticated sights, also from custom shop. IMHO more convenient to carry.

Nice gun!  The SDP is my favorite carry pistol, followed closely by my DW Guardian 9mm.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the SDP if you've not had experience with CZ before.  I find that I shoot CZs better than I shoot Sigs and that is high praise indeed.

Try out the P10s next  ;D

I suggest you call Stuart at CZ Custom and ask him if this gun is OK for duty/carry use.  Depending upon how it was tuned, the hammer & action springs may need to be slightly beefed up, particularly if you will be shooting +P ammo.  Also, they may have installed a long firing pin, and you may want to go back to a standard pin & spring.  Anyway, it'll be a conversation worth having.  You might even go back to the seller and see if he can get the CZC build sheet.  Great gun.  I, too have a P-01 that has been tuned by CZC.

Not too surprising, you've discovered the CZ pistol class that scores highest in the forum poll: What is the best CZ? (https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=116062.0) Congrats.
