Title: Importance of bolt disassembly and cleaning
Post by: TJNewton on February 24, 2022, 07:31:54 PM
I was inspecting my VZ2008 during routine cleaning and found that the firing pin was protruding from the bolt and would not move.  It had been cleaned after the last session and while I always squirt brake cleaner down in there and check for rattle, either this had eluded me or something had gotten stuck in there during transport or dry cycling.  It required a punch to remove the firing pin and could have been a disaster during the next range session.  Always check the firing pin before use.

Even though I had routinely flushed the bolt with brake cleaner, it had been several hundreds of rounds since I disassembled the bolt and cleaned it thoroughly.  The interior and small parts of the bolt were filthy.  I scrubbed and flushed it and ran a pipe cleaner through the firing pin hole.  The extractor was covered in baked grime and had to be scrubbed with a copper brush.  I inspected all parts including the firing pin and there was no visible damage or wear.  It seems that the binding was caused by dirt build-up alone.  There may have been some primer fragments in there but I didn't see anything.

The first time I disassembled one of these bolts years ago it was an ordeal.  They are, however, pretty easy to do if you have the right tools and approach.  The "L" pick in the VZ58 cleaning pick is indispensable, although any stout and sharp pick will do.  After a couple of tries and maybe a few hand gouges, it takes only a couple of frustration-free minutes.  Below is an excellent tutorial:
