On this day 111 years ago, the US Military adopted the finest sidearm in history. 2 World Wars and more!
My humble collection, although the Rock Island is technically a 2011.

They say 1911's are durable.
Don't remember where I saved this picture from. Supposed to be in a museum in France. The pistol was dropped in the water/mud when some GI was crossing the river in 1944. Found decades later. The info said it was pulled out of the mud, rinsed well with river water and it passed a function check. It's not pretty anymore, but it appears to still be in working condition.

I have seen the air dropped canisters from ww2 with 1911’s and loaded magazines. Neat sight.
