Title: 85C trigger Problem
Post by: alphabeta on April 15, 2022, 08:23:23 PM
I just had an 85 C installed in a 20-yr-old 75 D Compact. Now I only have double-action at half-cock. The trigger only resets when the slide recoils or I cock the hammer. It will reset when I just barely pull the hammer back, just the smallest amount of pressure.

The adjustment screws are in. Nothing else was changed. I tried changing the screws, i.e loosen/tighten. No change.

With the slide off I can see the rear of the trigger bar pop into place or reset when I give the hammer that very slight pull. It seems like something isn't right back there.

The rear of the trigger bar is just over a millimeter below the bottom of the ejector until I put a little pressure on the hammer. Then it pops up to contact the bottom of the ejector. Or, at least that's how it appears from my perspective.

On my P-01s I see that the rear of the trigger bar is up against the bottom of the ejector.

When I pull the trigger when in the un-reset position, it lifts what I think is the firing pin block lever. But isn't engaging something beneath that until I manually reset with the hammer. I can see in my P-01s that the firing pin block lever isn't lifting until the hammer is fully cocked.

Is the trigger bar spring riding in the trigger bar grooves?

No. It doesn't appear to be as high as the trigger bar in my comparison P-01. In my P-01 the top of the trigger bar is slightly (maybe a millimeter) above the bottom of the rail. In the Compact the top of that upper curve of the trigger bar is just flush with the bottom of the rail.

When I make that very slight pull on the hammer and it clicks and resets, it pops up to the same position as on the P-01.

Your pretravel screw is too tight.

Earl was asking if the trigger bar spring was riding in the groove of the trigger bar.  You may need to also adjust the tension on the right side.

Cgw has tutorials on his website on how to set the trigger screws and trigger bar spring.

Cheers,
Toby

I've tried setting the adjustment screws in every conceivable position from both extremes and nothing changes.  The only real difference is that at one extreme the trigger won't return at all. No matter where the adjustment is, there's no double-action without actuating the hammer manually (at least, a little).

I'd start by just removing them all together.

All you did was install the 85c trigger?

Did you check the trigger bar spring?

Toby

Like tdogg said, go ahead and remove the trigger screws altogether. That eliminates them completely from the troubleshooting process. Your gun is a D model so the pre-travel screw is of no real use anyway.
