Title: 9mm +P in P-07?
Post by: nevada on May 31, 2022, 02:57:17 PM
I've done all kind of searches without finding the answer to this question. Here and on the 'net. Going through my ammo I found I have +P in 115, 124 and 147gr JHP. Most of my ammo is standard pressure, the +P is all factory. I apologize if it's here, but I didn't see it. Thanks.

I'm no expert on ammunition.  Some others here are into reloading and will have better informed answers.  My understanding is that the P-07 along with other modern CZ pistols are built to meet the NATO spec for  9x19 ammunition, which is higher pressure than standard pressure ammo here in the US... closer to the +P spec under the SAAMI standards we have in the US.

I personally practice with and carry standard pressure ammo, usually 147 gr Federal HST or equivalent factory ammo like Syntech 147 gr training rounds, but I've fired a variety of ammo out of my P-07 without issue, including 9mm NATO and some +P rounds.

Having said all that, you may want to run a stronger recoil spring to prevent premature wear on your pistol if you are going to be feeding it a steady diet of high pressure loads.  The factory recoil spring is really stout, but many of us get away with running lighter springs with standard pressure loads.  I personally run the 18 lb CGW spring, but have also run the 15 lb spring without any malfunctions.  I think the factory spring is more like 20 lb.

That was an interesting read, especially regarding NATO spec ammo pressure differences between cartridges intended for pistol vs SMG.  I didn't realize there was any controversy regarding the NATO spec for high pressure loads as described there.  Although I notice that this post dates back to 2003, so maybe there are some updates to be found somewhere?

On the Czech website CZ has this model identified as being compatible with 9x19 NATO in the specs:

https://www.czub.cz/en/firearms-and-products-product/cz-p-07-9-19-nato

...but on both the Czech and CZ-USA websites the only manuals available for the P-07 and P-09 state to use SAAMI or CIP compliant ammo only, and never mention the NATO spec.

I wonder if that CZ P-07 9x19 NATO model has anything different about it, compared to those we receive imported into the USA?  Maybe a heavier recoil spring at least?

The only NATO spec ammo I have used was Winchester White Box FMJ purchased from big box stores like Walmart or Academy, so I probably wasn't risking blowing my P-07 up with that ammo.

• There are all sorts of questions about factory ammo which are answered in the Stickie at the top of this forum entitled: DIRECTORY of Ammo Buying Information

• I note that you did not mention the brands of your +P ammo. There are some legitimate +P brands (Federal, Speer, Remington, etc) and bullet weights made for law enforcement. However, a great number of +P offerings for the general public are made by "personal defense" specialist who only make that one type of ammo. They are 'highly acclaimed' in their own YouTube video and no where else. They pretend to make a better ammo based on the fact that they use a proprietary bullet. These bullets always have strange ogive shapes and a menacing appearance.

There are 2 problems with this type specialty ammo:
1. FIT
The big problem with specialty bullets, an issue well known to every reloader, is that not all bullets fit the CZ chamber. The CZ has a shorter freebore and uses a fully supported chamber, both of which severely limit the design of ammunition used in CZ pistols. Amateurs falsely assume that there is a standard 9mm Luger round 'size and shape', and thus, all 9mm ammo fits all 9mm handguns. This is a false assumption. It doesn't fit unless you've done 'plunk and spin' tests on several rounds in your CZ barrel. Furthermore, we also know that CZ chambers are not standardized across the line up. The Shadow chamber is not like the PCR chamber, which is not like the P07 chamber.

2. FEED
In order to be successfully used, SD ammo must be known to feed reliably in your firearm. It may feed perfectly in the Glock or S&W firearm in their video, but that doesn't mean it will do so in your CZ. You'd need to run several boxes of this ammo through several different mags to reach this conclusion. Typically the price or availability of said specialty ammo precludes this type testing.

The Bottom Line is this.... any questions about chamber pressure take a distant third place seat to the questions of Fit and Feed.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you gentlemen. I found out about the short chamber when I replaced a barrel on a 75 no B. I am also aware of the plunk test, but have no done it on the factory +p anno I have. I don't have any specialty self defense ammo. I'll plunk the factory stuff (and spin), it will give me something to do. Also I will see how the ammo compares in the 75 and p-07. I'll check my reloads and test as recommended on all of my ammo. Your information has been very helpful and I've followed the links. Again, thank you.

When we cranked up this forum around 2005, if a round fit your SP01, then it was also good in your P01 and 75B. That's not the case anymore. Every CZ owner has to stop making basic assumptions and start checking the fits on all the ammo, regardless of the source.

Hope we've helped.

I do not have personal experience on the P07 but can say without a doubt that Hornady 9mm +P 135 gr flexlock critical duty ammo will run perfectly in my 75b full size stainless as well as my 75b compact. 100 rounds thru 6 different mags split between the two pistols and not a single malfunction when tested before i settled on this as my carry ammo.

I added the Critical Duty Flex-loks to the preferred ammo list after several boxes through my P07, and the Wife's P07. No Hiccups and minimal POI shift from our practice ammo.
