I've never killed a snake with non-snake shot ammo.  Killed a couple copperheads a long time ago with snake shot in a snub nosed .357.

Looks like you darn near took his head off.

Dang. That would have hard for me to see unless it was moving.  Hopefully it wasn’t near your house and pets and kids

The weird thing (for me) about snakes is that I don't see them right away most of the time.

The copperheads I killed (first one while hunting) was a couple feet from me when I saw it.  I walked up a hill to look down on the fields on the other side and stopped as I got near the top.  I was looking for groundhogs and not moving.  As I looked back down at the ground in front of me (before walking over the top of the hill) I saw the copperhead in some tree limbs just to my right (small tree limbs.)  Pulled the speed six out of my pocket and popped him.

It's a weird feeling to realize you almost stepped on a (poisonous) snake.  Just another step or two.  Be looking around at other stuff and then suddenly see that snake within feet of you.

Hunting here in Texas, a friend asked me why I always walked with my head down. My reply. Snakes.I noticed him looking at the ground also after that.

We live in the country and have a 2 acre pond 150 yards from the house. So far this year I have 2 cottonmouths and my wife none. Last year she beat me 3 to 2. We both carry Cajunized 75B compacts

We called em Water Moccasins or just Moccasins where I grew up. Nasty SOBs with a well earned reputation for being aggressive! Was chased by one while canoeing once. Not sure what he planned on doing if he caught my canoe.  :o
