Title: How do I know if the screws are staked?
Post by: randyflycaster on October 17, 2022, 04:19:59 PM
I have a 6 year old 85b and a brand new showdow 2. I want to reverse the magazine release. How do I know if the screws that hold the magazine release pins are staked, and is so, how can I remove them?
Thanks,
Randy

Usually they are not staked (dimple created with a punch) but most times are lok-tited.  Heat the screw head first.  I use a soldering iron and hold it to the screw for a few minutes.

Since when? The vast majority of CZ's I've had apart have had that screw staked. Granted, the last S2 I worked on was not staked, but there was also no Loctite on the screw when removed.
For the OP, the easy way to tell if the screw is staked is to look for the dimple(s) on the frame adjacent to the screw...it's easy to see. If staked, it isn't difficult to remove. Just use a correct gun smithing screw driver bit. After reinstalling,  re-stake with a starter punch.
FWIW, CGW recommends against the use of loctite on this screw.

My 75B and two SP-01's have been staked.

Both staking and LocTite thread locker are means of securing a fastener. If you are doing the proper pre-application oil removal, using LocTite primer, and the proper LocTite grade for the screw size, then you don't need the staking. IMHO, that would be redundant.

Danged if I know but neither of the screws on my two Shadow 2’s mag releases were staked.  If referring to the 85B I couldn’t say, never had one.

Soldering iron, good tip.
Thanks

All of my CZ's have had retaining screw staked. My new S2 OR ('22 production) is first non staked 75 I own. Blue Loctite only.
I prefer staking but probably CZ opted out for low cost option again.  >:(
Put Loctite and tighten it down, is unfortunately cheaper option than fine adjusting and staking as it was before.  :(

P.S. Majority of CZ 75 and derivates I've worked in last two years came from factory with improperly adjusted trigger bar spring.  ???

I recently had my mag catch screw reset in an SP-01 I think I blue locktited it.
can you please elaborate on the " improperly adjusted trigger bar spring. "

can you please elaborate on the " improperly adjusted trigger bar spring. "

trigger bar spring hooks ride out of the trigger bar grooves where they should be. Mostly riding on the outside (closer to frame) edges of the grooves instead.
Then a user must "fix" it with dental picks and similar tools. I think a good way of doing it is to adjust using a mag catch spring screw, not to pull on hooks. If you pull trigger bar spring hooks, TBS "arms" will stay in the same place anyway, so you did nothing because you will move arms (and hooks consequently) with the magazine inserted if TBS arms are not close enough to the frame.

If a person wants the job to be done as it should be: mag catch spring screw out, clear it from Loctite, new spring in, adjust it with screw (hooks 1mm from frame to ride in grooves), stake mag catch spring screw.

I got the feeling CZUB is economizing on working hours where they can.
