Title: "New" CZ SP-01
Post by: Sulpgnir on February 27, 2023, 10:54:45 AM
Has anyone noticed the new CZ SP-01?

Pictures shown are from circa 2018 (top) and 2023.  The price has gone up about 29% in commie CA  >:(

- Flatten trigger
- Fiber optic front sight
- CZ logo stamped on the frame

The biggest and most disappointing change, IMO, were the mags. The original 19 rnd mag had a full length metal body. The base plate attached normally and extended up to fill the gap. The new mags are just 17 rnds with a plastic +2 extension and funky attachment mechanism. The difference in quality is apparent. I will admit I’ve never had an issue with them, but I’m easy on mags. The +2s style never dropped free in my gen 1phantom, but that’s probably just my frame.

And a third slot on the rail. It's a good thing I have two now so I won't have to buy another (maybe).

Not sure about the new SP-01 mag ext but the old ones had an issue where if you slammed the mag into the magwell in a strong fashion and also pushed forward on the base after seated, it would jostle the button loose. The base would slide forward, dumping springs and ammo. When I first heard about that I said BS but it was fairly easy to replicate. I even have an example of it happening on one of my older vids.
anyway, I like the looks of the newer one and the recurve trigger of the old one was not also great.

AZ_CZ:

I use 16-round all metal magazines without extension; thus it’s not a big issue for me.

I got the 16-rounders during a brief period in 2019 where commie CA gun owners were able to purchase high capacity magazines.

……
anyway, I like the looks of the newer one and the recurve trigger of the old one was not also great.

newageroman:

I was going to install the CGW combat trigger on the new SP-01; though I will try the new trigger first and determine which one delivers an ideal pull.

My 2021 #91152 issue has the flatter trigger and has meprolight true dot night sights

Looks like very small rolling changes. It may just be my eyes, but the slide stop and safety lever look to be slightly different.

So, after 2019, CZ updated the trigger.  My 2018 has the MEPRO TRU-DOT as well, but with the old recurve trigger.

Somewhere around or after 2021, CZ updated the front sight.

Not sure what kind of decisions led to these updates, R&D, customer suggestions (complaints lol), costs, price point, etc.

Good catch Claymore504!

The safety levers are different on my SP-01s (2018 vs 2023), CA variants, perhaps providing some tactile improvement.

Fixed it for you. Left CA in 1977. The writing was already on the walls.

Wonder if the sp01  shadows are different now also?

Mine is an Oct 2021 model and the factory trigger was very smooth and light. The CGW upgrades and SAO reduced the SA trigger pull slightly.
Excellent all around.
Thanks for the comparison

You are right AZ_CZ.  It is unfortunate that our 2A rights are slowly being taken away by CA commies.

I have the CGW's Standard Package ready to go, but I will shoot stock for now to test the updated trigger.

If I remember correctly, the SP-01 I worked on, the SA pull was around 3lb.

I will try to post some pictures of the innards and see if there are other subtle differences between the two.

I did notice that the paint finish is different as well.  2023 version has the corrosion resistant black polycoat finish, not as shinny as the 2018 version.  The description for the 2018 version was just black polycoat.

Trigger bar lifter spring - left and right.  The part that gets me is that the spring on the right is pinning against the frame and not sitting in the grove.  Same thing on both SP-01s.  I don't think it is by design, or is it?

One thing I noticed in my 2021 version (fiber optic front) was the lack of machine marks inside and on parts.
Btw factory trigger action had no grit as commonly reported in the past.

I also noticed the lack of machine marks as well.  I am sure that the updated SP-01s will be as enjoyable to shoot.

The profile of the updated trigger is almost identical to the 85 trigger (stainless steel).

The machine/tool marks are almost gone (especially the trigger bar and the sear cage).  CZ probably re-tooled and passed on the costs to us  ;)

I still smoothed out the bits with 1000-2000grit sandpaper and polished them before reassembly.  With the 13lb main spring, DA/SA went from 8.6/4.8 to 5.4/2.2.  The trigger action is very smooth, and the break is clean.

Thanks gentlemen.  I took it to the range yesterday and it was a lot of fun!  Low recoil, fast sight acquisition and a smooth trigger, a perfect CZ trifecta  :)

It's good to know that CZ USA still tries to improve their manufacturing process.  ;D

Besides the cajun stuff I installed,I also installed an adjustable rear sight since it is a range gun for me.

Does this mean that the replacement parts list will be changing from one year to the next?

I don't think the parts list will change at all.  The parts seem to be better machined and finished, but the specs should be the same, and perhaps with tighter tolerance.
