Title: 7.62x39 ammo quality
Post by: CZJedi on August 15, 2003, 07:22:09 PM
I want to get a 527 in 7.62x39. However, I want to shoot some decent ammo through it. Any suggestions? I know S&B makes good stuff, but I have never been able to find it. If it costs too much, I might as weel keep my Yugo SKS and keep putting Wolf through it.

I shoot african 762x39 ammo through my 527.  I find it to be accurate, with a flyer every 10 rounds or so.  Its called cheeta and I ordered through shotgun news.  It costs about 1/3 as much as American ammo.

Try Cheaper than Dirt. They carry a lot of S&B ammo.

Remington soft-point ammo works pretty goon through mine.

impactguns.com (http://impactguns.com) sells the african brass cased ammo. Its berdan primed, but it shoots super clean, and is loaded hot. They claim match grade accuracy from this ammo. Called Cheetah ammo. Good stuff and relatively cheap. I think this is the same stuff someone else mentioned.

S&B 7.62x39 ammunition is no longer imported into the US.  If someone knows of a source for it, please let me know.  None of the usual S&B retailers have had any in stock for over six months now.

Also, S&B 7.62x39 is steel cased, Berdan primed.  It is roughly equivalent to Barnaul 123gr FMJ.

I recommend Lapua ammunition in this caliber.  Winchester USA and Remington UMC are relatively economical, brass cased alternatives.  I would save shooting large quantities of steel cased ammo for an AKM or SKS.
