Title: Rear sight removal on TSO
Post by: Redpete on March 14, 2023, 12:07:31 PM
I am trying to remove the rear sight on my Tactical Sport Orange.

I have removed the two set screws and adjusted the elevation screw all the way down.

I have soaked the sight in Liquid Wrench.

I am using a Wiregear sight tool.

I have tried pushing it both right to left and left to right, but it will not budge.

Is there anything else I need to do or what should I try?

Thanks.

Are you trying to drift for windage or remove the sight completely?

Drift right to left as viewed from the rear.  Use several layers of masking tape on the sight.  Get a large brass punch and and a decent hammer.  Put the slide in a vice (soft jaws or leather padding or plastic padding) and get it moving with the hammer.  You may want to remove it completely to ensure there isn't loctite holding things up.

Once out, clean the dovetail and fit the bottom of the sight such that it drifts in by hand about half way.  I use a flat surface (glass plate is ideal but anything that is flat will do) and a reasonable grit sand paper (300-400).  Sand the bottom of the sight in a random motion checking frequently for fit in the slide.  You can't add material back so go slow and check fit frequently.

Once it is fit you should be able to use the sight pusher.

Cheers,
Toby

I want to remove it completely so I can install a red dot using the side mount.

What I am hearing you say is the sight tool can't exert enough force to move the sight out...is that true?

Thanks.

Yeah it might have loctite gluing it in place, it might be a little tighter than needed, etc...

You need a little persuasion.

Toby

It is possible that Wiregear sight tool does not have enough torque to move the sight.  Can you use an adjustable wrench or a small pipe to turn the adjustment wheel?  Be sure all the screws on the sight pusher are lubricated .

If the sight was fitted with red Loctite, it might be a challenge.

I can use a wrench on my sight pusher to turn the adjustment wheel.

Thanks for the help.

I had to use a punch to get the sight out.

I had the same issue. Ended up using a larger vise with rubber jaws...like CZ Custom warned me, you have to hit it a lot harder than you'd expect. They said they've never had to machine one out but that they ARE tight.

In other words, it's common.

Using the CZ Custom rear sight dovetail mount to use a red dot. I like this more than the Czechmate now will likely get it milled.
