Title: I have a gun addiction.......
Post by: USAF Ret on June 08, 2023, 07:00:13 PM

Quick! Your only hope is to distance yourself from your addictive substance! I will selflessly volunteer to "hold" your addictive firearms for you for the duration of your cure. Usually 30-40 years I believe. PM for transfer details. I'm here for you man!  8) :P

Impressive!

Just askin'...are they all in working shootable condition or are some de-milled?

I'd be interested to know what all calibers they represent.

My collection (CZs + others) involves 26 different calibers.

My objective is to have a minimum of 2 working weapons in each caliber.

Yes they are all in working condition, except the Egyptian Rolling Block, I'm awaiting the parts to make it shootable again (Firing pin and extractor). None of them have been demiled.

As for all the calibers, 25 different calibers as of right now.

223/5.56, 3 ea
6.5 Japanese, 1 ea
7mm, 2 ea
7.5x54 French, 1 ea
7.62x25, 1 ea
7.62x38, 1 ea
7.62x39, 2 ea
7.62x54, 10 ea
7.62x51 NATO/308, 2 ea
303 British, 1 ea
7.7 Japanese, 1 ea
8 mm Mauser, 6 ea
8 mm Mannlicher, 1 ea
41 Swiss, 1 ea
577 Enfield, 1 ea
30-06/M2, 1 ea
43 Egyptian, 1 ea
9 mm Luger, 4 ea
9 mm Makarov, 1 ea
380, 2 ea
44 Magnum/Special, 1 ea
22 S/L/LR, 2 ea
12 guage, 2 ea
36 ball, 1 ea
38 Special, 1 ea

I have at least one example of each round for display purposes, with the exception of the 43 Egyptian. I can't bring myself to spend $75.00 for an original round yet. For some rifles I have two rounds for display, the original cartridge and the new cartridge. Example the Snider-Enfied, M95/30 Mannlicher and the Gew 88, etc.

Here's a shot of the P1853 Enfield muzzle loading round (Minne) and the Snider-Enfield breech loading round it was converted to take.

Do you really think it'll take 30-40 years? Didn't know the cure would/could take so long.....! :o

Yep 30-40 years would work. 20 or so left in me and 20 years for my son to "hold" them for you. I'm making a multigenerational commitment to your well being. Sainthood pending approval. ::)

I'll get to work on that Sainthood application paperwork ASAP. With all your generosity in helping me in my addiction, I'll submit an application for a Humanitarian Award for you also.

Oh and how do you wish to do the transfer? Do you just want to drive here and pick them all up?

That's Impressive!

You have a lovely collection man.

Thank you, and it's all my wife's fault. A buddy of mine collected milsurps and after I retired she bleep near twisted my arm off convincing me to buy my first milsurp. It was the K. Kale Turkish Mauser , a few months later we met up with my buddy at our first gunshow and two Mosin Nagant M91/30s followed me home. It just snowballed from there.

I bet she regrets it now......!

This is not an addiction... I would say it is just a good start.  I remind my wife that I can waste my money on guns and ammo or spend it on older whisky and younger women.  She can choose.

I am proud of my shooting brothers who are willing to assist you in your hour of need.

Best wishes.

Didn't find any surplus handguns today, but I did adopt a stray 1896 Terni Carcano M1891 (Long rifle). So the gunshow wasn't a bust. Just need to find a bayonet and sling to complete it. Here's some quick shots of it.

Gonna be at the Wakulla Springs
Lodge around 4th of July. Be happy to bring my pickup for the transfer.  ;)   If that area is your stomping ground, any suggestions on things to see down there? Good lodging? Restaurants. ETC ETC? And of course gunstores! Going to meander along the coast road in the panhandle from St Teresa to Pensacola over a week. Been years since I've been to the Pensacola Naval Air Museum. Love old war birds. Milsurp is milsurp right?  ;D
Oh yeah, GO DAWGS!! SIC 'EM! ---Fellow GatorHater.
And so the moderator won't gig me for being completely off subject, your collection humbles me! I thought I had a good milsurp collection going. After seeing yours, I now have some "Keeping up with the Johnsons" to do! Now I'll be able to go to my wife with the "But honey, the other guys have one." excuse for purchases.

I'm in the Panama City area.....If your wife likes shopping there is Pier Park on Panama City Beach. Before going to the Museum call ahead to just to make sure you can get on base. Its been hit or miss with civilians gaining access to bases around here. One week we can bring guests on base, the next week no go. I read where PNAS was allowing visitors on base for the museum, but things change week to week. So double check before driving out.. Eglin AFB Armament museum has a small aircraft display, about 15 or 20 birds. They are just outside the base and open to the general public.

Panama City itself is hit or miss on restaurants, Panama City Beach has ton of seafood places, but I tend to stay away from that side of the bridge, gets too congested with traffic during Spring and Summer.

Gun stores have become hit or miss, there are some gun and pawn shops between Tallahassee and Panama City. I'll get with a buddy in the Tallahassee area and see if he can drop me the names of them.

There is the Man Cave in Callway/Panama City, he normally has a few milsurps. Jays in Panama City and in Crestview have some milsurps from time to time, typically priced on the high end. Seems like all anybody wants anymore is AR platforms or hunting rifles.

On topic, I found a bayonet online for my Carcano, waiting to hear back on it. Found some ammo and clips for it, they've been ordered. Now I just need to find the correct style sling for it and she'll be complete. Still need to break the rifle down and check her out.

Funny story with the rifle. My wife was helping me look the markings over on the rifle and I racked the bolt back and heard a loud click and the bolt wouldn't go back in all the way. No matter what I tired the cocking piece could not be pulled back to reset it. I tore the bolt down, and found enough grease to supply a 50's Greaser with hair product for a year. Once cleaned, I was finally able to pull the cocking piece back and reset the bolt and viola problem fixed.

Thx for all the great info!! Will definitely take it to heart.
As per cosmoline, if the gunk came in colors I'd consider painting my house with it! The dang stuff seems almost indestructible! Bought a couple of Yugo SKS rifles that appeared to have been dipped buttstock to bayonet completely in cosmo! Took a while and some elbow de-grease to clean em up. Mineral Spirits pretty much melts it off but still a huge mess!!

True, finding one local hasn't been successful. Finding a new FFL that doesn't want to rape me on the transfer, or doesn't want to make the process harder than it is, hasn't been easy either. Went to buy a CETME C barreled receiver. Seller, like most, wanted my FFL to send proof of said FFL. Well two that I went to, stated the seller or their FFL HAS to send their FFL to them first before they would send theirs. Another FFL I checked with wanted $100.00 for the transfer, whereas most, not all, around here charge $35.00 to $45.00. Some FFLs won't accept anything that they didn't purchase or order.

My go to FFL retired and the business he worked at closed up shop. But when dealing with him, he just gave me a copy of his FFL, and said when you order something give me a heads up so I know it's coming.

There are a lot weapons on my wish list, I'm slowly finding them, its been a long slow process. I've been collecting since 2011, so 12 years now, had a break from doing so after Hurricane Michael. Damage to the house was severe, both Jeeps were totaled, tons of furniture damaged beyond repair. So between Oct 2018 and May 2021, I made no gun purchases. I was focused on recovery and rebuilding....

I take the stock and hang them outside or in the shed and let them heat up and leech the grease out. Sometimes I speed the process up with a hair dryer or heat gun. Metal parts I pour boiling water over them, give them a quick wipe down to dry them, run a patch or two down the barrel as need then wipe them down with transmission fluid. I can do the metal portion of a rifle in 15 minutes or less. I'm always waiting on the stock.

Wood is always the more tedious part. In addition to what you mentioned one super lazy way (if your environment allows) is just to let them sit outside in the sun on a hot bright day.

Check out Falfiles. Deals pop up on there, or just a make a post about being new to FALs and people will help you get one. I got a nice Steyr made FAL with all German and Belgian parts on an Imbel receiver for way less than they sell on the broker or classifieds

Wow amazing, I am inspired to get more. I thought I was addicted to the firearm syndrome I don't know that was just an head start. Time to get more firearm.

There are many more on my wish list, it's just finding them that takes so long. Sometimes I walk into a local pawn shop and find something unexpected, especially for where I'm at.

Example walking into a local small Gun & Pawn shop, and finding a 1 of 3,000 Finnish 1927 Tikkakoski stepped barrel M91 Mosin Nagant, built on a 1895 Izhevsk receiver. Couldn't get my wallet out fast enough, all while trying not to grin like the Cheshire Cat. Stole it for $299.00 OTD in Jan 2012.

At another Gun store I found a Finnish M91/24, built on a 1915 to 1917 Remington receiver, with a Böhler Stahl stepped barrel. Stole it for $185.00 OTD in Dec 2017.

I scour any Gun store or Gun & Pawn I can find and see what goodies or treasures I can find. Sometimes the deals come to me. Went to a local gunshow and when I walked out I saw something laying just behind the front driver's side tire of our Expedition. Turns out it was a Militsry/LEO surplus 20 round AR magazine, got to love those deals.

I have my eye on a Carcano Cavalry model right now, it's in a gun shop literally 0.4 miles or 1 minute drive from my house. That is the dangerous store for me, as it's so dang close....He's gotten a fair bit of my gun funds over the last two years.....I'm always looking for the next stray, homeless, milsurp to adopt!

I keep a book with a complete list of my firearms on a spreadsheet, plus there is a two page document for each weapon. A description page with pertinent information on the firearm itself, plus date bought, price paid, current market value (Updated every 6 months), the second page is a photo of said weapon. Book is awesome for filing Police reports, insurance purposes, wife purposes, etc. Plus there is the electronic copy on the computers, and USB drive and CD copy in the safe.

My kids will get their pick of what they want, my wife will decide how many to let them get or which ones to let them pick from, and the rest she'll sale or hold onto. Her decision if she outlives me, especially with my heath issues.

Had herds like that a couple of.times in life, but culled them by piling layers of guns 3-4 layers deep (separated by blankets) in truck bed and taking them to my local dealer and asking him what he'd give for the lot....

When I'd talk to him of buying another, he'd opine, "**** boy, you don't buy guns, you LEASE them." Of course, that is true for every owner, and majority will be sold off or stolen when "owner" no longer around to say "mine Mine MINE!!!"

I keep things simple.today, if they don't get used then they don't stay, and by used I mean constant companionship and going places. Anything else a waste of money.

When the world ends and we need to fight of aliens your house is the meet up spot for one last fight.

Your post reminded me of a similar situation. Wife and I watched Shaun of the Dead again last night. I was laughing to myself because they ran out of ammo.

When dreams, drool, and night sweats are involved, it’s an addiction.
