Title: Different finish & different market
Post by: Fred Flinstone on March 15, 2004, 06:23:29 AM
Thru the years of rifle shooting I've noticed various rifle mfgrs. offer:

-Dull sheen stock and blued sandblasted metal, this philosophy of mfgr. is fonction serves design premise. Europeen have been pioneers with this finish for hunting.

-Highly polished stock and high polished blued parts are the marks of quality which American rifle shooters are used to.

Recent downpour of Europeen firearm in the North American market have gradualy immerced shooters to both philosophy and have been very well adopted by this public. We can now see North American rifle mfgrs. offer the dull sheen concept. Old shooters were waiting for these a long time ago. What is waiting for us in the future?

Unfortunately, this has damaged our choices in good optics. European companies make American style scopes in the US with 1" tubes second focal plane reticles and no target turrets. Meanwhile they jack up the prices on the European made scopes and also convert them to second focal plane reticles. Recently Zeiss discontinued their high-end US made scopes while raising the prices on their European scopes.

The only benefit has been Leupold finally coming out with (real) 30mm scopes and Premier Reticles converting Leupold scopes to first focal plane reticles.
