Title: Do I Really Need a New Sear?
Post by: mrcabinet on November 25, 2023, 09:42:13 AM
I recently acquired a 75B with what I'd call a pre-pro package installed. I thought my other CZ triggers were good, but this one puts them to shame. I'm seriously considering purchasing one of CGW's hammers to try in a BD. I'm happy with the springs, disco, etc. in this gun, so I'd just be replacing the hammer. CGW recommends replacing the sear at the same time, but they are out of stock. Do I really need a new sear, or would it be OK to just clean up the existing one with a little stone work?

I can't remember the details, but the geometry of the hammer is different from the factory one and you may not be able to get the safety to work without using the CGW sear with the set screw adjustment.  I would wait for the CGW sear.  Perhaps someone else can confirm.

I read that if you have more that 500-1000 rounds through your gun and upgrading the hammer, you should replace the sear. I can't remember specifically where I read it but I believe it was in the CGW site. I personally would wait until the sear is back in stock.

The B-safety model hammer and the BD-decocker model hammers are different. If you are replacing the hammer in a decocker you can re-use your old sear. If you are replacing the hammer in a safety model then it's best to get the CGW adjustable sear as the geometry is different on the hammer and renders the safety inoperable without refitting a factory sear. The CGW adjustable sear negates the need for hand fitting of the sear.

Yeah, I really wish they made an adjustable sear for the BD but, alas, they don't. I honestly don't know how many rounds are on either of my BDs, since I'm the second owner, so it sounds like while it may be doable, I should probably wait until the sear is back in stock. I'll probably go ahead and take advantage of CGW's sale and order the trigger. It's going to be really hard to hold off installing it until I get a sear though, lol.

You don't need to replace the sear in a BD gun when changing the hammer.  So unless your sear is damaged (take a close look at the sear edge), then you are wasting money as the sear you get is going to be a factory part.  Don't try and fix any damage as the part is case hardened, just replace as needed.

The easiest way to damage the sear and hammer is to not properly adjust your trigger pre and over travel setscrews(regardless of CZ variant).  If the sear doesn't properly clear the hammer hooks (improper over travel setscrew adjustment), then the interface between the two parts can get rounded and you could slowly shoot your way into an unsafe firearm.

The real reason for replacing the sear on safety variants (B models) is to help with the install not because of any interface/alignment with the competition hammer.  The competition hammer has a higher sear bed and alters the timing of the action.  This forces you to either modify the sear to fit the safety nub, modify the safety nub to fit the sear, or purchase an adjustable sear from CGW.  All options are viable but the easiest is the CGW sear.

I'm not sure why round count would matter (especially such a low round count)?  There are CZ guns out there that get north of 5000 rounds per month.  The parts are case hardened and should last a very long time.  I've yet to hear of anyone wearing out action parts due to shooting volume.  Nobody makes a decocker sear aside from the factory so you would be replacing it with the same thing.  It's going to "wear-in" to the new hammer regardless of it's age or round count.

Cheers,
Toby

Good to know! Guess I'll be ordering a hammer today.

I’d get what they recommend.
I have 75B Omega so may be little different.
I installed pro package in mine with race hammer, and sear in mine as well as stronger sear spring.
Might ask if upgrading sear spring would suffice.
The reason he explained to me is due to harmonics, and way mesh together in some guns.
Every gun has a personality and some same model could have different harmonics.

The omega variants are a completely different action and are similar to the P07/P09 variants.

So I know it's been a while since I made this post, but I just now got around to ordering the CGW decocker hammer. I decided to install it in my compact, since it has a little creep that bothers me. It's had a full fluff 'n buff inside, spring swaps and the sear looked fine, so I just did the hammer and pins. I will say that it was worth every penny! The SA pull dropped half a pound, and the break is phenomenal - almost that "breaking glass" feel. Now I want one for my full size BD!

It's a slippery slope!  You too will soon become a trigger snob and will require all the goodies.

Congrats on the install and happy shooting!

Cheers,
Toby

Ha! I've been sliding down that slope for years.

And like many of us, enjoying the heck out of it, too. ;D
