Title: Red dot sight on CZ97 dove tail
Post by: topjack on December 02, 2023, 06:46:28 PM
I recently started to think about a potential problem that could occur and hoped to get some feedback from others. Some time back I installed a Red dot mount on my CZ97 bd dovetail with Zero issues.
Since that time I have run across a couple articles which said “using a dovetail mount is not recommended “ due to the nature of the 45 cal.
I’m hoping to get some feedback of what others thing about this setup. I’m leaning on returning to iron sights.

I have one setup for range fun. Took it out last week, https://czfirearms.us/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;u=10864, and was doing fine until the locktight broke and the screws got loose! BUT these were to the plate. The mount was great. If this were a serious gun I’d have it milled just to bring down the line of sight. Still shooting well a second year production! https://imgur.com/a/uMWMkMd

Sure, a milled slide is "better", but I've used a dovetail sight mount on a 97B"E" for nearly 10 years and maybe 10k rounds of bullseye and 100/200 yard demonstrations without a single problem and with no change in zero.  If one knocks the gun/sight around or carried it where it might get knocked it might move, but a range gun carried in a bag where it is protected, assuming the installation was good, seems perfectly fine to me.

Had one on a 97E for several years, probably 3000 rds thru it, need to tighten screws if no locktite, but otherwise
no problem.  I have Holosuns on 3 other 45s with no issues other than check the screws holding the optic in place

The only issue I know of is the 97 dovetail can be a bit oversize, so you may have to add a shim and some loctite. For anything other than bullseye type shooting, milling for dot mounting is preferable.

Definitely agree.  I had to add a 5 or 10 mil shim to mine to get the mount tight enough, but it's been fine for years.  I've moved the same mount around to 3 different pistols for a week or two at a time and then reinstalled on the 97.  The fit was different on each pistol.

I am one of the few people who has won a local bullseye match with a P-07, using the red dot and mount from a 97!   (The 97 is slightly better for bullseye.)

I started my 97B with the dovetail mount, then in a fit of having "too much money" temporarily, sent it off to CGW for a milled mount and a bushing. Noticeable difference even at 10 m my usual distance. Obviously way better at 22 m! I normally shoot Academy Monarch, not exactly match grade ammo, but even that is grouping noticeably better. I have a JPoint mounted. Fun point, my EDC is a S&W M&P Shield PC 45 with a crimson trace red dot. Clearly sourced from the same manufacturer, wherever that might be... ;D
