Title: Trimming baseplates? P01 + MecGar
Post by: Rittmeister on December 31, 2023, 01:20:22 PM
I have a number of older 14-round flush-fit MecGar mags for my P01.  I like the flat baseplates best but the grip is short enough that the front of the baseplate runs into my pinky sometimes when inserting the mag.  I've used Beretta 92 baseplates which are flush with the frontstrap but stick out further underneath, and I've tried the newer 15-round mags which have other issues with the heel of my hand.

Has anyone tried trimming the flat metal baseplates so they're flush with the front strap?  I'm wondering what tool(s) you may have used, and what you finished the cut metal with.

Any info appreciated!

I’ve done that multiple times with just a regular bench grinder and then smoothed them off with a file. Just make sure your magazines drop free before you trim. Otherwise, you may have a tough time removing them nothing to grip.

I just did this with a couple rami 14 rnd mags which I don’t use for my rami. Got a couple of flat baseplates, removed the sleeve and put them on. Took a scribe and etched a line on the baseplate flush with the mag then took it to my belt sander.

Came out perfect. Just need to find something to color the bare steel.
