Title: I'm still around, just changed focus some
Post by: M1A4ME on November 04, 2024, 06:57:46 AM
I've mentioned before the CZ swing away from the models/calibers I like has moved me to the M&P pistols the last couple of years.

The last two CZ pistols I bought were long discontinued models.  An early P07 DUTY model in .40 S&W and a later Omega CZ75 9MM.  I haven't spent any time working with those.  Just shot the P07 one range trip to get an idea of how it compared groups with the P07 .40 I've been carrying for the last 10 or 12 years.  It shoots good enough to warrant a trip to a shop for milling for a 507 series Holosun when I get around to it.  Nice to be able to have a spare.  The Omega CZ75 is pretty (love those long beavertail frames) but I've never shot it.

Spending time/money on the M&Ps.  Shield Plus and projects with a couple of those doing things most people never will (got a working .40 S&W CZ Plus but only a couple 9MM magazines converted.  Reliable at the range so far but the problem converting magazines due to the geometry of the Shield Plus magazines/frame means a conversion to .40 doesn't yield the 9MM to .40 S&W carry/capacity ratios of the other M&Ps.

Got a .357 SIG Shield (easy as a .357 SIG conversion barrel in a .40 S&W Shield slide.

Easier to get stripped frames/slides and internal parts kits for the M&Ps for building up a 5" .40 S&W slide for a 9MM frame, a Compact frame for another project (will be doing another one of those in the next few months after I'm farther along on the latest knee surgery recovery.)

Once you buy the right barrel for an M&P it can make a big difference in the accuracy if your CZs have spoiled you.  The Apex triggers are awesome in the 2.0 models.  Hard to beat.

I've recently fiddled with swapping out the 1.0 model frame internals with 2.0 model parts and it works great.  I've got a couple 1.0's (.40 S&W sub compact and a 9MM 5" PC pistol) with 2.0 parts now.  Big trigger upgrade even without the Apex trigger kits.  Possibly more of that in the works.  Means if I can't find a suitable 2.0 model and can find an older 1.0 model the switch to a better trigger/frame rail set up is easy as buying a set of used parts on the internet and swapping them out.

And I've switched over to carrying a Shield Plus a lot of the time I conceal carry now.  My wife has gotten to the point of needing an easy to rack the slide carry pistol (Equalizer) and the darn thing uses the same magazines as the Shield Plus so now I carry the Shield Plus when we go somewhere together.  Always had issues (especially on a road trip) of getting her to remember to pack spare magazines.  Now I just pack mine and she's covered.  Still carrying the P07 DUTY .40 when I go places by myself.

Oh, I'm not sellng any of my old CZ's.  They don't make them anymore and mine have always worked and shot great.

Good to hear from you!

I'm thinking the M&P 2.0 might be the only other brand I might try some day.  I got to talk to an M&P fan at the shooting range a few weeks ago and he had 3 he was shooting on the pistol range.  They were gorgeous, but I didn't want to shoot them for fear I would want one, LOL.

I got tired of waiting for CZ to make a ready-to-go optics pistol. I researched and shot the Masadas, bought the Slim and Tactical, and they've replaced my CZs for carry. I keep a P-01 Omega by the bed at night, but it doesn't get carried anymore.

CZ dawdled for several years so I moved on and unless something exciting happens, I doubt I'll be back.

I've seen some nice group pictures people used their M&Ps to shoot.  I think I'm slipping much more than I like.  Not just that I can't do it with the M&P pistols but maybe not with the CZ's either.  I have a lot of nice pictures of 6 to 8 years ago but some days I really struggle and don't know if it's me, the pistol or the ammo.  I don't always carry the old P07 with me to let me whether it's me or not.

I do know that the 20 5" FDE 9MM shoots better groups for me with the Apex Tactical barrel than with the factory barrel.  A year or so back I built up a 5" FDE .40 S&W slide to put on that 9MM frame and bought a KKM Precision barrel for it.  That is a big sweet shooting pistol but so far only with Win. 180 hollow points.  My CZ "food" doesn't do well in it.  I will buy another KKM barrel at some point for another project that's in planning right now.

I'm hoping with two rebuilt knees standing on the concrete at the range won't be as painful as it used to be and won't affect my range performance or duration of shooting time.  Then I need to get back to working on my arm strength, again.

The M&Ps sure do fit well and feel good in my hand.  Much better than the P07 or P09.  The P07 and P09 just shot better groups for me.  Sometimes I'm sorry I waited to get so old before I started learning some more things about shooting (used to think I knew more than I realize I did).

I like working on projects.  It's why I converted my CZ75 Compact to the CZ85 controls and the spur hammer.  Same for the CZ785B .40.  Just harder to get "raw" materials for the CZs and they've cut so many nice pistols from their brand.  I may yet get another Omega P01 at some point (meaning if I walk by a table with one at a gun show.)

I got tired of waiting for CZ to make a ready-to-go optics pistol.

As much as I'd love to replace the 75D PCR I foolishly parted with, I'm having a lot of fun with my P365 - particularly collecting different pre-owned slides (optic cut), grip frames and magazines to mix and match until I come up with the best combination.

I know I complain about CZ not offering several (many) of the older models and calibers they used to make/sell and it looks like that's going around.

I recently wanted a subcompact .40 M&P.  Just happens they are 10 round magazine guns without having wasted grip length or space at the bottom of the magazine.  S&W no longer makes sub compact .40's in their 2.0 line.  I found/bought an older 1.0 model and fixed it up like I wanted.

In the last couple of weeks I got the urge for a Compact M&P 2.0 .40 and those are no longer listed on the S&W website either.  Just 9MM guns.  Shades of CZ.  Still making .45's and the newer calibers like .30 SC, 5.7, .22 magnum, 10 MM and of course, the 9MM.  I just didn't want any of those.  I had a 2.0 FDE compact frame and found a 2.0 Compact 4" slide/barrel in .40 on ebay and bought that to get my compact .40.

Lots of ideas for the Compact .40.  Need to find out how it shoots before going with it as is or saving up for another KKM Precision barrel.

I do keep getting the urge to dig that CZ75 Omega out of the safe and take it to the range one trip and see how it does.  I just hate to shoot it.

Me too.

At one time I couldn't fathom it, but during a recent hunting trip, I was "protected by Sig" with both a 10mm that COULD have been used for hunting and the P365 for the pocket.

I guess there is just no love for the hammer with new pistoleros; perhaps those same folks that disdain the good old V8 IC engine.  Although finding utility in a couple of striker fired options, No -- I'm not driving around in an EV.  I don't golf.

PEACE!

I got out my two .45 bullseye pistols this morning and headed to our small local range, hoping to meet up with a volunteer RSO that had a new .45 he wanted me to shoot.  Well, I went later than usual, so the 3 rifle bays were occupied by the time I got there, then my friend forgot to bring his fancy 1911, so I turned around and went home.  I'll try again tomorrow shooting my own .45 hammer guns, and then try the friend's next Tuesday.

I still favor hammer guns myself, but have developed an appreciation for the striker guns, but it took a few rounds!   Still hard to beat a P-09 or a CZ-97B"E".

I might even get out a P-226 Sig some time soon.  I still have 4 Sigs, I think, just not with red dots.

"I think" lol

Someone else said it.  "If you know how many you have, you don't have enough"!

Yep, proud member of SASS now! So don't feel bad about branching out, there's nothing wrong with being a CZ fan AND liking other guns, indeed.

My latest project is an M&P 2.0 Compact in .40 S&W.  Something they seem to have dropped from their line up.

Had the FDE compact frame already on another project gun (means having to order another frame for it, but they aren't hard to come by and can be as cheap as $20 plus shipping/fees for a stripped frame.)

Got the complete 4" upper off ebay a few weeks back (.40's are cheaper than 9s because the FBI has gone back to the 9MM).  Seems to operate manually just fine but I'm hoping to get to the range this week to try it on paper.  If it's good to go (accuracy wise) as is I have further plans for mods after the first of the year (send it off for barrel/slide porting).  If the factory parts don't get it done then a new barrel from KKM is next on the list.  Followed by porting/sight location movement and then dot optic cut with slide refinished.  It could be a nice pistol if things work out.  A slightly better carry pistol than the full sized 2.0 .40 that I can carry, but really has no benefit over the P07 .40 (gotta go a ways to compare to the P07 with group sizes).

The range I shoot at rents them.  I know if I try one, I will want it and ultimately buy.  I have low resistance when it comes to things I like.
