Title: Safety or decocker

Angus,

Does the safety on the cz's work with the hammer down or just on "condition 1"?

Which do you prefer?  Why?

Anyone else care to weigh in on their preference and why?  

I'm looking to buy a cz as my next handgun and would appreciate your feedback in helping me decide which way to go.

(The CZ safety only works with the hammer fully cocked -- unless something isn't right.)

Decocking a gun is a basic firearms skill. Some folks just won't develop the skill or technique needed.  A decocker gun makes it easy.

I prefer carrying cocked and locked.  That does away with the differences  between the first and second trigger pull, and allows me to shoot more accurately, more quickly.  

Others prefer starting from hammer down or from the half-cocked notch.

It truly a matter of personal preference.

If you shoot steel or IPSC, or whatever, you will be asked to start from DA in you have a decocker model, as they usually make you have the safety on if loaded and holstered.

A decocker doesn't do anything I can't allready do just fine.
It prevents me from doing other things however.

Of the four CZ's I own two are decockers and two aren't. It all depends on personal preference, the intended use of the gun, and who else in your family might be using it.

The safety cannot be engaged with the hammer down. Cocked and locked works for me.

Having the choice is what I wanted - cocked and locked or hammer down double action first shot.  It's one of the features that attracted me to my CZ85 Combat.

I normally carry the guns with the hammer down, especaillay if they are in the central console. I ahve no problems with the DA first sshot.

The real genius of CZs is the option of going either DA or cocked and locked, so I don't understand why serious shooters would give up the excellent SA trigger in favor of the decock model.

I carry cocked and locked, for that essential first shot with the great trigger pull should an emergency arise. However, I can imagine circumstances where I'd rather be on the ultra-safe side with a DA pull, as on those rare occasions when you grab a gun with no time to put on a holster and just shove the thing in your waistband.

I agree totally. SA if the gun is holstered but DA if it is in the waistband glove box central console, anywhere which might interfer with the safety and trigger.
I love to ahve the option. Decokers ahve there place, especially for people who are a little windy about lowering the hammer

Like Angus, SA or DA doesn't seem to bother me much either. What counts is when I pull the trigger, it goes bang. I've gotten so used to my PCR, that when I shoot my Colt 1991A1 on the range, or any other gun with a safety, I forget to disengage it. So I go click, it does nothing. I'd rather not have that happen in a combat situation.

If you ever get REAL casual about lowering the hammer on a live one, you might do what I did the other day and set one off.  That was a wakeup call, now I pay attention again...

It not jsut setting the live one off it is the slide coming back and cutting your fingers off LOL. I would never have admitted to that one Matt. Now we have you were we want you.
