Sorry if this has been asked before... I've searched and couldn't find a anything. I'm completely new to handguns and the SP-01 is my first. I'm looking for the best ammo to use . So far I've shot 1000 rds of Remington UMC 124gr FMJ at the range. I'm now looking for good self defense ammo. My thoughts are to go with Federal Hydra-shok 124gr JHP. From what I've read this is good personal defense ammo. What gets me is the grain, 115, 124, 147. Which runs best through the SP-01?
Again the is a home defense not concealed carry.

I use mostly 124gr Federal HST if I can find it. Hornady TAP and Critical Defense are also fine along with Speer Gold Dot. With Critical Defense you can only get it in 115gr. I think a lot has to do with your own preference. Buy some, and go to the range and give it a try.

I've shot a number of different 115's so far in my SP01, with no issues. Remington UMC, Blazer, WWB, and the local Gun Range reloads ( Atlanta Arms ). For bowling pin matches I've been shooting 147HP, WWB, mostly, with no issues there either.
Basically anything I've put in that gun shoots well.

Any top name brand will flow through my P-01 9mm ......... but you should use a well known brand during the break-in period.

Big time personal choice you are asking but here is my take. #1 if you are shooting 124 grain try to use that as your SD also. Reason - 124 packs more wallop and therefore more kick so if you where shooting 115 for practice you would also need to shoot some 124 to get used to that difference. My preference in 9mm is Gold Dot 124.

Thanks All, Seems most folks stay away from the 147gr and the +P in 9mm. I picked up a box of 124gr Fed Hydra-shok, 147gr Hornady TAP and 124gr Speer Gold Dot. I'll test them all out at the range this weekend. Thanks again for the input.

Just for more info the gold dot comes in regular and +P for the 124g

Larry,
I like your rendition of a CZ at the bottom of your post. Very creative.

The new Winchester Elite Bonded 124 gr +P is good too. It is effectively the "Black Talon" under a new name. I would stick to 124 gr loads as the barrel is made for them.
One word of advice. It is considered to be better to use what your local LEOs use. That makes it more defensible in court as you are not using any "killer loads" and no more force then the local cops do. Just a thought.

Thanks czprime, the local cops suggestion is good info. A friend of mine mentioned the Black Talons a few days ago, he uses them exclusively (.45 not 9mm).
