I'm curious if there are others who, like me, prefer the grip and ergos of the CZ 75/85 models versus the new SP-01 grip geometry, and if so, why?
-
SP-01 is superior to the 75 in all respects because the controls are easier to operate without changing grip. The SP-01 is the proper evolution of the design.
This is my opinion...I made it myself! :)

Well. there's always got to be one in every crowd. I carry an SP-01 in either 9mm or 40 based on where I'll be working. Here's my view.
I don't care for the 9mm SP-01's way getting the 2 extra rounds in comparison to the CZ75B. They extended the magazine and put this goofy plastic cap over the end. This extends the butt of the gun by ~3/8" and makes it "lumpy" under clothing. The SP-01 in 40cal does not use these extensions, so it's a bit easier to hide. As to the grip geometry I have (2) SP-01s and (2) CZ75Bs and beyond this "stuff" hanging down issue with the 9mm SP-01 I can't say I see a great deal of difference. When it comes to CZ ergonomics "It's all good!!!" But, that's a CZ!
Bottom line, when I carry and I'm not at work, I carry a CZ75BD in 9mm. The other issue, when you're asked to "go get a loaf of bread" by your Commander ( read = Wife ) it's easy to slide anything without a rail, into your waist band (Mexican carry). That's my opinion.

to me the 75/85 fits a tad better then the sp01. but the difference doesnt stop me for me from having them all.

Here in California we don't have an issue with "2 extra rounds" since all magazines are limited to 10 unless you owned them before the ban. :(

I have the Shadow, SP-01 and the 85 Combat. Of the three I prefer the 85 Combat. I think it balances better and is not as heavy. I use the 85Combat for IDPA and the Shadow.SP-01 for IPSC.
I have replaced the adjustable sights with competiton fixed rear and FO front and replaced the stock hammer with a Competition Hammer. With a13# mainspring it has the same trigger pull as my Shadow. As far as mags are concerned if you don't like the extension just use regular mags meant for the 75B/85C. They work in al the 75 iterations.

I like the SP01 frame shape ( not including the rail ) over the std 75B. The upswept beavertail allows for me a higher more comfortable grip and I like the bigger mag release button.
So with that in mind. I really like the 75SA frame and the Stainless model with the upswept beavertail of all my CZs.

I'm with Stuart on this issue. He stated the exact same way I feel about the 2 types of frames.
In fact I have an 85 Combat that has the "original" frame design (happened to belong to Stuart at one time) and it is easily the best trigger set up in my whole CZ inventory and although it works fine I've become too accustomed to the SP-01/Single Action/up-swept beavertailed frame that I started with.
It might just matter on what frame you started with or spend more time with that matters as well as how your hand is shaped and how you grip the gun.
I will also note that some of the frames with the up-swept beavertail and the decocking lever may fit differently. This was noticeable to me when I had the SP-01 tactical and how I gripped it compared to the SP-01 Phantom which is an even more evolved form of the CZ 75 grip.

SP-01 felt good, the CZ-85 is better. YMMV
-
I don't have a preference. The only issue I have with the 85Combat is you can't reverse the mag release. I am right handed and I prefer to release the mag with my trigger finger. I find it so much faster and you can keep the gun on target.

I too agree with Stuart. I think the difference is subtle, but prefer the SP-01, SA, and newer stainless model frame shape. It just allows for a slightly higher grip on the gun than the original.
-
SP-01 works better for me. Had 85 Combat and sold it as it was too light to my liking to start with and then it'd be less controllable during shooting. I shoot both USPSA and IDPA with Shadow :P

I prefer the 85 combat

I think the voting, so far, is pretty reflective of the general population... It appears to be a wash.
My opinion is way less important than anyone else who has responded, because I don't actually own an SP-01.
My experience is that my 85C fits my had better, but I really dislike snappy 9mm muzzle flip. The whole idea that 9mm is easier to shoot than .45 cal., because of the lesser recoil, is lost on me (again... I humbly defer to the experts, this is just my personal experience). After a 100 rounds of 9mm (115-145 grain) my wrists really begin to burn. The same number of .45 rounds don't hurt my arms nearly as much. For this reason, I'd probably buy an SP-01 (most likely a Shadow) if I were to do it over again. I think that weight up front would go a long way to improving the 9mm shooting experience... Maybe even more so than the grip geometry.

If you have larger hands, there is no advantage to the SP-01 in my opinion. For many years, the appeal of the 85 Combat was that they were readily obtainable and better made than a Type A CZ-75. (Both lack the FPB.)
-
For my hand CZ75SA frame is much better, and I even modified my CZ85 beaver tail to get close to 75SA design. Upswept beaver tail allows to have gun deeper in your hand and it means nore controlable grip. Just look at 1911 design - GI models and newer ones
