Title: 82 or 83
Post by: SCATTER CREEK on August 15, 2010, 09:14:48 PM
Hi folks, this is my first post on the CZ forums. I have the PO1, it's still a little larger than I had in mind. I've been saving to purchase the 82 from whomever had the best deal with the most goodies and the least amount wear and tear as the "pot" got right. I just noticed on the CZ83 forum last night that "SOG" has 83's for $249, not that much more than the 82's. I understand that the 83's are used also, so what would you folks say would be the advantages/disadvantages of these two pistols? What say Yee?

Depends on the use. The 82 is 9mm mak and the 83 came in 380 and .32 (scarce). The Mak pack more punch but less than 9 mm Luger (your current CZ) and the .380 is pretty light duty but easy to shoot with barely any recoil compared to others. Either is heavier than what you have now being all steel.

Look around in your area. Here the 9MM Mak and .380 is very attainable in stores.

I have sht .380 and 9 Mak rounds. Like the 9 Mak better IMHO.

I shoot both 82 and a Bulgy Mak in 9Mak and like them as carry guns.

I have a Kel-Tec P3AT that I carry as a BUG. The gun is lightweight and very concealable. I don't generally carry it as my primary weapon due to the round. Yes, shot placement is everything and more people have been killed with a .22 caliber bullet than all others BUT for me .380 is for back up work. However, the 83 packs 13 rounds instead of 8. Still, I prefer 9 Mak over .380.  That's why I carry my CZ-82 as a primary weapon a few days a week.

82 packs 13 rounds also

I think you'll find more .380 rounds at your local gun store, but they aren't cheap.

I know for me the deciding factor was the price of ammo. I can buy 9X18 ammo online for around $9 per box. I can't touch .380 ammo for less than $15 in a store or $13 and some change online.

Otherwise, they guns are identical, except that the Mak rounds are little more potent.

Thanks folks for your replies. I believe I favor the 82 for the extra umph of the MAK round and that they can be made from cut down and trimmed 9MM cases. I think the Hornady Critical Defense Load is available locally and Fiochi (is that two c's or two h's?) is at Academy stores. I'll see what other responses may show. No reason to get in a hurry this late in the process. Thanks again for your replies.

Well, the 82 is no longer in production and there's a finite supply of them to be had.  They're an amazing gun and I would grab one as soon as possible.  I have two and may just buy a third.

If any of you know where I can buy some self defense ammo other than Silver Bear online, I'd appreciate the link. I had to rotate out the last of my Hornady for that cheap crap due to age. I regret shooting it up, since old Hornady is probably better than new Silver Bear.

I know some folks rotate ammo for different reasons, sometimes due to "age factor". So I have to ask, how old is your ammo?
Typically ammo will outlive you if treated correctly, i.e. stored dry and safe.

I have on occassion shot ammo older than myself with no problem, and I have a few years behind me.

Just curious.

I guess it wasn't really that old (maybe 3 years). I had heard that you should rotate it out and mine was looking dull and worn from loading and unloading it before and after trips to the range.

ammunitiontogo.com may have some? I bought Privi 32 acp ammo there twice and was satisfied with the price even with the shipping charge.

Both Hornady links are sold out, but still...great link, I'll definitely use it in the future. Thanks!

3 yrs is nothing for ammo.

Typically "rotating ammo" is referred to the ammo in the magazine. The top round in a magazine is often chambered. The pistol is not used, so the chambered round is put back into the magazine on top, and the pistol is cleaned, mag inserted, and chambered for use.
That top round keeps getting chambered, and thus as the slide slams into battery, it is possible to lose headspace over time.

How much surplus ammo 20+ yrs old is shot daily with no issues? Tons of it, if kept properly.

So it IS a good idea to "rotate your ammo", but not for reasons of age generally.

Just something to think about.

I agree with NVCZ. I've personally shot old but non-surplus ammo that was over 10 years old and have had no failures at all. Shoot, I took my family to the range a few weeks ago and we shot some .22LR ammo that I've had now for at least 15 years. At one time I had over 10,000 rounds of .22LR. I haven't bought any in 15 years though. I've just been shooting from that I bought way back then.

I need to start buying it again. If I don't, I'm gonna run out. It's just hard for me to pay $3.00 a box for ammo I used to pay less than $.50 for for most of my life. Still, I need to replenish my supply before it's gone.
