Title: Hi everyone! New guy here and may have a Witness .40 slide Problem?
Post by: RandallG on January 08, 2011, 02:38:08 AM
Just joined the group and am happy to be here!
Was looking for information about the Witness Classic and it led me here.
I used to own a Witness 9mm that I fixed up and shot, then got got rid of a few years ago. (It shot pretty well but it had been beaten pretty bad by the prev owner and I wanted something a bit nicer.
Tonight I picked up a .40 witness that has the rounded slide and just says
"classic" on the frame not classic II?
Also I'm reading there are problems with (THIS) slide? Not sure if I got one of the ones that have problems or not but this is to be one of m carry guns and I can't afford to have cracks develop on the thing.....
Is there any way to know if I have one of the thin bad slides?
There is no mfg date that I can spot on the box?
I know it's late but I was hoping someone would read this and give me some insight to the issue....
Thanks in advance!

Let me see here.  You just bought a gun, have not fired it yet, and think you might have a problem?

Welcome. (http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/images/smilies/Welcome.gif)

This issue is being discussed at the link below, the same suggestions mentioned there will work just as well with your 40 cal if you really are concerned about it.  There's really no way of knowing which slides may have issues until they actually start to crack.  The 40 S&W is supposed to be less likely to have a problem though.

If there is a problem with cracking anything I won't be allowed to carry this gun, nor would I go out with it.
I have several guns that have been approved but would like to carry this one if it makes the grade at the range as I'm sure it can.

SO to answer your question. YES

Thanks You. I'll see if I can glean more info there. It would likely be a month before I could take it out with me anyway but If I had know about the new thinner slides being a problem I would have just bought another XD.
DO you or anyone know why I can't find the "classic" model on the eaa website?
I have seen " classic II" for sale but have no idea when this gun was MFG etc....?
Kinda confused here....

Allowed and approved of by whom?  LEA?

Before going thru any type of qualification, you need to shoot it and get it broken in (not broken) and also test it with any ammunition that you will be required to carry.  Tanfoglio and CZ handguns have short barrel throats and some ammunition, loaded long, might not chamber.

I don't know much about the Classic model, it may be a recent addition or an older model that doesn't have a page their site anymore.  The date code should be stamped on the frame just above the trigger guard like in the pictures below.  The date code on my TZ75 (also built by tanfoglio) is the small square with "AN" stamped in it meaning it was manufactured in 1985.

There has only been one incidence of a Witness 40 cracking. Out of the thousands and thousands of Witness 40's sold and in use, one and only one has had a cracked slide. EAA didn't make the gun, they imported it, and they made it right with the customer and he's been pretty happy since. I wouldn't worry about it as the chance for yours to have any problem would be pretty rare.

Very interesting..... I have what looks like (although it's pretty tiny) a G  T  V in an upside down triangle and what looks like some dear antlers and something else inside. Maybe I should take a pic before my shift and post it.
