Title: Gun For My Wife
Post by: OkieDokie1982 on February 13, 2011, 04:45:25 PM
My wife LOVES MY CZ P-01. She does think it's a little too big for her to carry. I thought about getting her a RAMI. The only problem is she just can't pull the slide all the way back. Any Ideas?

If you have a range nearby that rents pistols, take her along and let her shoot a few different models until she finds one she likes.  Failing that, go to a gun store and let her leave finger prints on a bunch of pistols.

If she loves the P-01, try her on a PCR. It's almost the same size, but the frame difference without the rail makes a big differance for some with carry. get a good holster, not a cheapie, and she'll have no difficulty, most likely. Good rig and belt makes the HUGE differance. High Noon comes to mind...

Hand exercises and practice help for the slide issue. Or I'd suggest she try racking it a different way.

I rack the slide with the gun in upright position palm on top rested against the left (safety side) serrations of the pistol and and all fingers on the serrations on the opposite side (my preferred method)

Or sideways (ejection side up) pinch the slide with the meaty palm part of my left thumb on top and all of my fingers on the serrations underneath. With both ways I always push the frame hand forward instead of trying to pull the slide back. It's a lot easier and faster.

I never rack by pinching the slide with my thumb and forefinger.

There are a bunch of videos on youtube to demonstrate. Different ways to rack the slide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVwmrXT6iZk#)

If my 75 year old grandma can rack my 75B, she should be able to rack your P-01 :)

If she still has trouble, hand exercises or maybe find a gun that suits her better. Maybe a revolver?

I second the PCR or a compact 75 for the thinner frame. They're a little heavier to carry though. As for Rami's, I've only held one and it felt pretty decent. Kinda like a G26 in my hand. I personally don't care for sub compacts as much because I'm not as accurate with them, I feel more recoil, and sometimes I don't get a good grip. May not be the case with the Rami's but I don't know first hand.

CZ-girl hit the nail on the head.  It is a lot easier to push the pistol away from you while holding the slide, that to pull the slide toward you. Bigger muscles come into play!

Good advice, I'll see if she has any problems with this method.

Yes, CZ-girl is right, it helps.  My wife tried that it was easier but not enough.
If your wife will have still hard time to rack the slide, here is your last chance.
It will cost you some change but it helps.
Send the P-01 to Angus and ask him to change springs that your wife will be able to rack the slide.    In my wife's P-01 he installed 11 lbs recoil spring and added  another  9 lbs spring to the box,  in case that 11lbs will be too strong. He also changed main spring and  did  the trigger job and other adjustments.
There is one more 'little' expense.  If you have two shooters in the family you will need to reload your own ammo,  it will save you a lot of $ in the long run.   Angus recommended "not to use the factory ammo or +p etc." with this spring.  (change it back to original).   It might break the slide stop.
I am loading for her the zero bullets over 3.9gr N320.  Angus load is 4.1gr.   I tried 3.8, 3.7 and 3.6gr and did not have any problems or FTE.  To be on safe side I am loading 3.9gr for all my guns.
Before using these light loads she could fired only 30 rounds WWB and her wrist and thumb joint was in pain.( from 35 years typing)
Now she can shoot  over 150 reloads.  I have to beg her to stop and leave some ammo for me.
One more thing: she is using this wrap around her thumb to have really soft recoil. (see pic)
This is not end of the story.
I bought from Angus P-07 and he did the same changes like to the P-01.
Now the P-01 is her spare or BUG and the P-07 is the greatest gun in the whole wide world. ;D
The only bad thing about this is,  she is shooting better than I am. :'(
Hey, for few  dollars  she is happy shooter  and happy wife is happy life.

Better light reloads than nothing at all! Interesting.

I have one of those wrist supporters. They sure feel good when your typing or shooting.

As for folks that hate Rami's guns. I love the Rami I have. I trust it totally. They are not for everyone but it works for me 100%
