Is a magazine loader worth getting for loading rounds in magazines?

Sure.

But with time you'll probably do like most folks who buy them do, and leave them at home.

I had a bunch that I inherited from a father who was a gun nut, and over time, I've given all but two away.  I never use them

You'll learn -- except for very new mags with very stiff springs (Glock mas are notorious for being hard to load) -- to do it quickly by hand.

When I run into stiff mag springs, I just down load them for a while and leave them loaded when not in use -- and the springs (as all mag springs do) will take a set and finally allow the last round or two to be inserted.

I, personally, always use a mag loader. UMT Mag Tool (http://www.themagtool.com) is the one I use.  It's like $5 or so, and it'll save your thumb.  Also I use it for 9mm, 7.62 x 25, and 45 acp and it's useable for virtually every cartridge made.
