If one looks back thru the posts on this forum concerning full length guide rods, it seems the materials mentioned more recently are Delrin, and stainless, especially since Mike cranked out some of those nice looking little beauties in stainless. Earlier posts seem mostly to refer simply to steel in a generic sense. And while stainless might be prefered, is there any real drawback to using a different steel? Considering that someone is going to fabricate one on a lathe as opposed to altering a hinge pin or whatever? It would seem that as long as the surface was smooth and lubricated it would be fine. As far as corrosion resistance, could not brass or bronze be used or would you run the risk of galvanic corrosion?

I would believe this to be true. A FLGR is not a major load-bearing component and probably does not need to be made out of, say, barrel steel (the Delrin GRs seem to hold up just fine). The only "abuse" that I can see a FLGR subjected to, is abrasion from (a) the compression and expansion of the recoil spring, and (b) rubbing against the exit hole at the front of the slide or recoil spring housing.
