I just recently took delivery of a SOG DEMO/Scuba, which I reviewed here (http://www.survivalistboards.com/showthread.php?t=226288). It will not be replacing my old SOG Government, which is my primary survival knife.
The Government was replaced by SOG with the Agency a few years ago. The Government has a pretty standard profile like the KA-BAR Marine Fighting Knife.
-
For fixed blades, my go-to knife is the SOG Seal Pup
(http://www.weapons-universe.com/Brands/SOG_Knives/Seal-Pup-SOG-M37.jpg)
For everyday use (general purpose use), I rely on the Benchmade 615 Mini Rukus.
I perfer these two knives not because they are the "best". Rather, I find them hard enough to stay sharp, soft enough to resharpen with an Arkansas stone, and they are able to withstand adverse conditions well.

I have this:

My EDC is this:

Hey, Widge, I have thought about getting the BG for my wife's BOB. Currently, she only has a Victorinox Camper, which is OK for a lightweight utility folder, but would not handle any heavy duty tasks. So, do you like yours? What do you consider its strong points?

It's strong points are (IMHO):
- It's a Gerber - the blade appears strongly made, holds a good edge, the spine is fairly wide should you need to hit it with something for use as a maul.
- It has a built in sharpener
- It has a built in fire starter
- The grip is well contoured and allows a fairly high amount of leverage. You can use the handle for pounding - although I saw a video where it cracked after considerable abuse
- The sheath is apparently well constructed
- It is fairly well priced and widely available
-
THIS would be my first choice ;D
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o173/mesabill/FR8bayo.jpg)
It's not real sharp but it gets the point across.
or maybe one of these:
The one on the right with the bicycle grip handle is an old German blade and "has been there done that" It's my favorite camp knife. I don't leave the house with my leatherman scissor multi-tool (it's on my keyring) and an HK folder.

Now I am going to have to pull out my cooking cutlery.....LOL
Very nice collections!!

If you don't have a picture of your "stuff" already get it now. If you get robbed your insurance company will be so happy with you they'll write you a check. No picture/no money - Bad bunny!

All I have for knives to carry. Both ride with me daily.
Benchmade Resistor and plan jane Leatherman.
-
My EDC favorite it the light weight Spyderco Manix 2 but for survival, I would prefer my Leatherman charge.
-
What are those stickers on the frame?
-
Those are the original stickers sent by Crimson Trace for my Lasergrips. I intended to put them on for photography then take them back off. I did not reckon with the superstrength glue CT uses on them! They've been there ever since. 6 years of holster and carry wear haven't made them fall off!
AZ_CZ, that's an FR-8, isn't it? One of those was on my short list for a long time.:)
-
Yep an FR8. Nothing says fun at the range like a Spanish rifle, with a German design shooting British radway in an American caliber using an Israeli sling.
-
I shoot a Czech rifle with an Israeli sling, Canadian aftermarket parts, and Russian ammo at an Arizona range. ;) Well, Russian ammo when I feel like using up some Wolf ammo.
-
Spyderco Manix 2 and leatherman charge.
-
I recently picked up a Gerber LMF and KA-BAR Mark 1 with a straight edge on the KA-BAR. I like them both. The KA-BAR fits my hand a little better than the Gerber. Both are solid knives. Been thinking of getting a Spyderco folder for EDC.
-
I think the Ka-Bar is the standard by which all other survival knives should be judged. It is a good, right-sized, full tang, fixed blade knife. If you find a knife better than the Ka-Bar, you are ahead of the game. But any less of a knife, and you are taking an unnecessary chance, especially considering the price of the Ka-Bar.
-
Edc is either my spyderco spyKer (the only spyderco made by ken onion) my kershaw leek. My gerber fast with tanto point or my kabar mule
Survival is a kabar usmc fighting knife, a case xx hunter fixed blade or a kukri machete depending on application
-
I have too many knives to just chose one, but in each pack I have fixed blade. One is my Kay-Bar and the other is a SOG Daggert 2. I've not used the SOG much yet, but I like the feel of it so far.
-
You know something? I don't have a single fixed blade... :-\
-
Check out the clearence section of Botachtactical.com they have some steels on good quality fixed blades.
I got my SoG Daggert 2 for $52 shipped.
-
You know something? I don't have a single fixed blade... :-\
I tend to be one of those people that just accumulates knives for no good reason (other than I like them). For me, fixed blades aren't nearly as practical as a folder in most day-to-day situations. I've picked up quite a few Kershaw's folders recently that I really like. I also bought a SOG recently that is absolutely fantastic - I will own more. I hear Benchmade is nice as well.
That said, I suspect a fixed blade could be more durable in rough conditions. One of my few fixed blades is a Cold Steel Military Classic, which is wonderfully sharp but so far is too "pretty" for me to use. From what I can tell, Cold Steel really makes a great product.
-
Last fixed blade I bought was an Air Force survival knife sometime in the late 80s. Had a small "sharpening stone" in a leather sheath and the blade came dull.
I forgot - I do have one fixed blade, sort of. It came free with boots from lapolicegear.com. I think they retail for $15 or so, Chinese made, not even stainless steel. With rigorous application of my equally cheesy 1990s knife sharpener, I did get it to hold somewhat of an edge, enough to actually cut things. It came with a neck lanyard and a nylon strap for a boot knife, both works with the plastic sheath.

-
In addition an assortment of "pocket" and do-all knives, this my surval knife. Mine looks as good as this one I found on the web. My sheath doesn't look good.
I inherrited it from my father. This model has a history. The company was a predecessor to the "Case" knife company

I have several versions of that sandy brown one. :) Kershaw makes a great knife at a good price. My favorite knife though so far is a SOG Vulcan. I really need to get another one of those...

GenSwiss,
Is your Gerber Lovelace dagger Seattle legal?
-
I rotate through a lot, but just picked up a Kershaw Volt 2, nice blade for the price and holds an edge pretty respectably. When I'm out in the woods or fishing my Becker Necker is a constant companion, for a short bladed fixed knife it is awesome.
Now for a "survival" blade., I have a blacksmith buddy that is helping me bring on of my hair brained schemes from paper to steel. A 24" Kukri, but designed for the lower 12" to act as a hollow ground draw knife. I mess around with a lot of bushcraft and love a draw knife for skinning trees. So I figured I'd make my own 4lbs machete/draw knife/axe combo.
Should get it done before christmas and I'll put up some pics.
-
That I would like to see! :)

Now that ain't gonna be legal in Seattle.

Thats why I dont live in Seattle 8) Just me, my five acres and 200 yard range. And Neighbors who know what I do and that they should be courteous and they will get the same treatment from me :-)

Not very exotic, a R.W. Randall Model 14 Attack. Simple.

This is mine. Have no actual picture but this is the same knive with same parachord wrapping. easy to use, easy to sharpen and easy to hide.

For traveling I carry my old Buck 110 which I bought as a young sailor 30 years ago and still serves me well.
When cutting a fine piece of meat I use a french Laguiolle.
http://www.sarlat-french-knives.com/couteau-laguiole_LAGUIOLE-POCHE-EN-CORNE-NOIRE_19.htm
Next on my list is a SOG Seal Pup or a BECKER BK2
-
Hi Armored man, this might be the knive you mean ?
http://www.fieldserviceantiquearms.co.uk/nice-usa-jet-pilots-survival-knife---camillus-1978-1239-p.asp
In WWII they used a MK1 survival knive in the navy, I guess the USAF had the same.
-
I'm sad to say I don't have a survival knife but I've been considering picking up a Becker BK2 for quite a while now.
My EDC knife is a Buck 277 Folding Alpha Hunter, pictured here alongside my 75 Compact. Crummy pic taken with my phone.

-
My current EDC is a Spyderco Native. It's a pretty small blade, but ergonomically it's wonderful. I've had it for over three years now and it's a great little knife.
I've been eyeballing a ZT 350 as an upgrade to my current EDC.
No fixed blades in the house as of yet, though I'd like to change that at least for our 72hr kits.

Anyone mention the buck hoodlum?

Im carrying a CRKT m16 10kz. razor sharp, slim, and easy to draw.

At what point does a knife become a sword?
-
Has anyone tried an ESEE knife? I have been looking hard at them lately and they seem to be the cat's meow. Just wondered what someone else might think about them
-
gmg,
I haven't tried nor handled one, but I've read a lot of good things about them. Due to the coated blades, I consider them more tactical than survival knives.
I think the ESEE knives have compound beveled edges (#5 in the following diagram):
The Bark River I got a half year ago has a convex grind (#6 in the above diagram). The edge is amazing. The knife has become my convenient EDC in a pocket sheath that also holds a single CR 123A LED flashlight, so it gets a fair amount of use. I sharpened it for the first time today, and sharpening with a strop is very easy.
-
Not only do I have a fondness for things that shoot :D, I also have a fondness for things that cut ::)

Kukris! I've heard when handled by an expert, they are far and away one of the deadliest fighting knives ever made.
I'd like a nice fixed blade that is heavy duty, but that costs real money, not going to happen any time soon.
-
short answer: KA-BAR
grew up in south east asia and my pop had a ka bar around at all times. i cannot tell you the amount of time i spent with that dinged up kabar in our back yard splitting bamboo to make bows and arrows or practicing 'throwing knives' (more like bouncing off trees). i hope he still has it... he is in bali now. anyways.
I like my Puma auto that my dad gave me.
That is an awesome puma!!!^^^
i have the little lieutenant folder.
EDC is one of the following:
one of my i dunno how many case soddie jr's or soddie clones
crkt m16-10ks (seen the most cary recently)
have alot of others that i cycle thru.
only other one of note is this throwing knife...
manufactured by Carl Schlieper (the eye) post 1983.
i guess they ordered a lot of these specifically for kopassus. (indo special forces)
have not seen them anywhere else.
wish i had picked up one of CS Fairbairn?Sykes TNI knives while i could have.
-
Thanks Skookum. I really the looks of the ESEE line and everyting I have seen or read has very positive things to say about them. Not sure how they hold an edge though.
-
Microtech Curahee and an Ontario Rat 3, both in D2.
-
I can't say that I really have a favorite knife. For carrying, I prefer carbon steel. My every day carry is a SOG flash II. I teach Kali (Filipino knife fighting) and so I like the spring assist. In a survival situation though, I would probably go with stainless. I love carbon but it is so hard to keep clean. In a survival situation, I would go with something simple like a leatherman and then something with a thicker blade (tbd), I will let yall know when I get my new bug out back finished.
-
I love carbon but it is so hard to keep clean.
But it's easy to 'sharpen' them like a razor. Some of the older carbon steel knives stayed amazingly uncorroded , and clean with minimum effort. The steel used was amazing.
For pocket knives I have a lifetime assortment from Case , Kershaw, Buck and a number of others, but my all-time favorite is the Kershaw Ken Onion spring assist lockback. It's relatively inexpensive, but sharpens pretty well and is THE handiest knife I've ever owned. I had the spring steel break in one , but found another to replace it. I take off the clip-on hardware and it's small and comfortable in pants pockets.
Gun shows sometimes have one that's an Asian knock-off that "looks" like the Kershaw, so buyer beware.
-
My teeth are my survival knives... :D
-
My teeth are my survival knives... :D
Without a doubt! I love my Sog and I also have a carbon Kukri that is pretty bad ass. 3/8" thick with a 14" blade - It is all but an axe. I keep it in the passenger's seat of my car just for shock value if I run into trouble and need to scare someone off.
-
My favorite is a Browning FDX-3 made by TOPS. It can shave and it has the mass for an excellent chopping tool. Keeps a great edge, but its awfully heavy for a knife, with the micarta grips I handle it pretty well though.

Awesome knife to have around - my top carried one is a cheap knife given to me some years back as a consolation gift - 12 years later and its still good as new, somehow...
-
Nothing exotic just pure functional quality knives.
EDC
Victorinox classic on a keychain
Spyderco Stretch II
Survival
Kabar heavy Bowie
Mora clipper
In my bag
Leatherman Wave
-
I have a SOG Swedge I.

-
My favorite survival knife is a Busse BWM (Bush Whacker Battle Mistress). Second would be a himalayan imports Ang Khola Kukri in the 16 inch length. Third would be a Koster Knives Survivor.
My EDC is a Gen II ZT 550. It is the nicest pocket knife I have ever owned. The HI Kukri rides in my car at all times and the busse is attached to my BOB.

Went to Sweden ( southern part Smoland ) for 10 days and took this home:
https://shopping.howei.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1009
I saw it in a small village in the local hardwarestore for only $ 13,- So I bought three, one for me and the other two as a gift for my brother and best friend.
You can get them in the most crazy colours, so there easy to find when you lose one.
I prefer black.
So if you evere go to Sweden, by a lot, and enjoy the scenery while you're there, it's beautiful
-
Just picked up a Gerber/Baer Grylls Ultimate Survival Pro knife. Gotta say this is a NICE knife and sheath system though I'm already planning a few mods to the sheath to add a few more items.
-
Air Force Survival knife with a sharpening stone, leather sheath and paracord tie-downs.
-
For EDC i carry a Benchmade 710, best folder i have owned been carrying one for over ten years and on my second one. For a survival knife i'd take my ESEE 6 any day of the week with my ESEE 4 as a second choice. Good high carbon steel with an exellent heat treatment, holds a good edge and resharpens easily. TOUGH knives with a no B.S. warranty.
-
How do you upload a photo image from your p/c to post it here?
-
Adam,
Either upload you photo to a service like Photobucket, from which you can post it here, or find a photo of your knife online elsewhere, from which you can post it here.
-
I use this one as my 24/7 go-everywhere self defense blade:
http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/26ASTX/6_TI-LITE_ALUMINUM_HANDLE.aspx
And as a utility I use this one for everything else:
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_807567_-1_757864_757853_757837_ProductDisplayErrorView_N
The Kaliforniya CCP is a lot like the UK in that there are no Open Carry rights for firearms here, and your access to CCW permits is almost nonexistent. Therefore like in the UK, knife crime is quite prevalent in California.
Ergo you need to be armed somehow wherever you go.
I was on a subway train here on one occasion where two guys held an entire train car hostage while they beat the crap out of another guy presumably for some infraction against them. They used knives.
I would have love to have had my trusty CZ 97B with me that day, illegal or not.
I would have blown them both away, then took off without waiting for a congratulatory salute from the local worthless sheriff.
In the case of a crowd shooting like that, since I already know someone is going to whine about this, when you shoot you always need to be aware of your target, the backstop behind the target, the area around the target, and the space between you and the target.
Therefore normally to take a shot in a crowd situation, you need to get down on one knee, and shoot UP at your target, so the bullet continues after it hits the target to fly off into the sky above and less likely into another passenger.
They teach you that in a self defense shooting class. Hopefully everyone will get a chance to take these kinds of classes.
Be prepared. ;)

My main heavy duty survival knife is a Buck Thug.
My light duty survival knife is a Mora Bushcraft Black resharpened to remove the bevel and made into a real scani blade.

Has anyone tried an ESEE knife? I have been looking hard at them lately and they seem to be the cat's meow. Just wondered what someone else might think about them
They are *amazing* blades, and the warranty simply cannot be beat.
My ESEE 6 is my favorite knife that I own. I have three of them lol.
I would not hesitate to recommend them. They cost around the same as SOG type knives but having had seal pups and the like I promise you these are superior.
-
Thanks Skookum. I really the looks of the ESEE line and everyting I have seen or read has very positive things to say about them. Not sure how they hold an edge though.
they do fine. They use 1095 steel, which is a well known good steel for knives and the like. It is known to be extremely strong and to hold a good edge, and to be relatively easy to sharpen.
The one downside of it is that it is known to be prone to rust if not taken care of. (of course, most all blades will)
That's a good part of why they put the coating on it. It's easy enough to strip off with some paint thinner.
