Title: Bird hunting
Post by: armoredman on July 13, 2012, 01:43:05 PM
Well, well, well. A good friend of mine is going to get his brand new CZ 712 shotgun next week. He has already said we need to go bird hunting in October. Be kinda neat, a CZ shotgun hunting trip.
Quick question for you experienced bird hunters - what birds fall under the Federal magazine restrictions? AZ will have no magazine limit for hunting with any firearm starting Aug 3rd, so I would like to not try to figure out how to plug my 9 round magazine to 2. I am assuming dove and quail are not covered, anyone with more knowledge?

If Dove are on the menu, you will probably need a HIP permit.  And doves *might* be covered by federal magazine restrictions.  Any game bird that migrates internationally *might* be covered.  Ducks and geese will certainly be covered unless you have a spring snow goose season when unplugged guns will probably be OK.

We don't often get ducks or geese out here in the desret, mostly mourning dove and Gambles quail. What's HIP?

What's HIP?

Its a permit.  State by state I think.  But every state I have hunted in requires one for dove.  Check your local regs.  HIP will almost assuredly be there.  I don't even think you have to pay for it.  Not sure, I pay for so many licenses, permits etc....I don't even keep track of them any more.  But check and see if AZ requires a HIP permit for any migratory birds.  Most states do.  Va, Tx, RI, Mo, all require HIP permits for any migratory bird including Doves.
