Title: Spring and Guide Rod
Post by: heavypat12 on July 26, 2012, 10:46:55 AM
Wanting to check with the community and see what the feedback is on changing out the spring and if a steel guide rod is necessary.
If you guys would, what has shown effective for you all, weights, brands, etc.
Also links and referrals would be appreciated.

I don't think there's any tangible evidence that the steel guide is superior to the plastic one, as I can't recall anyone saying that their plastic guide rod failed.  I think most people just do it because the steel guide rod feels higher quality.  It also adds a small amount of weight to the front of the gun, which can offset muzzle flip to a small degree.  As for recoil springs, it's largely based on the load you're shooting.

Thanks guys,

So say for a 230 grain FMJ range round what would be your spring #/brand recommendation

Original rods are Delrin.  Almost all parts in high end paint ball guns are Delrin and they never have any failures due to breakage and are under a LOT more stress than our guide rods are. I do have SS rods in a couple guns but only because they came with them.  Have a friend with over 50K rounds through his 75 and still has the original rod.

The stock springs and rod are tuned for 230 grain FMJ since that's the most common round. Unless you're going to shoot something unusually mild or unusually hot, I wouldn't change a thing.
