Title: Witness barrel cracked
Post by: slowhatch on December 02, 2012, 10:33:50 PM
As I was taking my Witness 45 carry comp apart for some cleaning I noticed the barrel was actually chipped at the edge where the bullet chambers. I'm not sure what has caused this. I don't know if the recoil back caused it. I just noticed it but am not sure how long it has been there. It appeared to be very used when I bought it. The recoil spring has been changed several months ago to a 16lb Wolff cut down to almost factory length so it would fit. It has always been very accurate but I've fought jams on the feed ramp going up into the chamber ever since I purchased it. I would have sold it already except its so stinkin accurate.

Any thoughts on what may have caused it? Do you know if Eaa still offers a replacement threaded barrel?

This one measures 4 1/8 and I didn't see anything like that on their website.

I attached pictures to help.

Call EAA for a Barrel for it.  I believe they still have some Carry Comp Kits in stock and may have a Barrel.

I dont see the chip.
My match barrel is hard chrome plated, maybe it's only the chrome that is chipped.

that top one is an odd looking spring!

It is a strange looking spring. I thought it was stock at first but now I'm not so sure.

I'll call Eaa to ck. on the barrel.

Your chamber mouth could benefit from some light chamfering, which would take care of the jamming/feeding problem you've been having.  All you want to do is break that sharp edge, which doesn't take much to do at all.

Hope this helps.

ReloaderFred,

Is 100% on the money.  I have had to "throat" every Witness pistol in 45ACP I have owned to get it to feed properly.  The chamber throat from the factory is essentially unfinished, being left with sharp corners that virtually guarantee feeding issues.

I think it depends on which worker did the barrel, since I've gotten some that were done right, and others that weren't.  It only takes a couple of minutes to dress up the chamber mouth and ramp.  It sure saves a bunch of aggrevation and is a quick fix.

Hope this helps.

I got around to calling Eaa. The comp carry barrel isn't available anymore. I guess I'll just shoot it as is.

On another note I've smoothed the chamber edges out. I can rack every round by hand and it feeds fine so I think that has taken care of the feed issue. Thanks for the advice.

You're welcome.  About half of my Witnesses have had to have this done to make them reliable.  It's really a quick fix, and can be done by just about anyone, but there are a very few people who shouldn't attempt it.  It's those who usually bleed when they get near a screwdriver or other tool.............
