Title: have you contacted your representatives? The opposition has
Post by: armed hiker on January 09, 2013, 10:02:40 PM
I was checking out some emails from the other camp and I hope pro-2nd amendment people realize that the anti's are working hard on this one. Reading a bit of what they are pushing and you get the feeling this is almost like Christmas for them. The best chance they have had in a while to ban and restrict firearms.

Some reading.

from moveon.org

Just three weeks ago, MoveOn members and our allies came together at over 300 candlelight vigils across the country to remember the victims of the Newtown tragedy and call for an end to gun violence.

It was a powerful display of national unity and a clear sign that people are ready for a change?but in the month since the Newtown shooting another 500 lives have been lost to gun violence.1 We can't wait any longer.

That's why on Thursday, January 17th, MoveOn members and allies will gather in living rooms and community centers across the country to begin planning next steps to end gun violence. If you've never hosted an event like this before, that's ok, we'll provide everything you need for a successful meeting. Can you host a meeting in Laconia next Thursday?

Yes! I can host a Community Committee Against Gun Violence meeting.

As Lori Haas, whose daughter survived the Virgina Tech shooting, said, "Your actions, your efforts, and your organizing will save lives."

"The tragedy in Newtown was a wake-up call on the gun violence occurring daily in this country?and on the need to push for new policies that finally end this source of pain and suffering. From demanding a plan from Congress and campaigning for states to pass stricter gun control laws to holding gun retailers like Wal-Mart accountable?the Community Committees Against Gun Violence are a launching pad for taking action to end gun violence. "

Keep those messages going to your elected officials, I know most of us do not do this on a regular basis but if we do not make enough noise out there I am afraid the anti's will be the ones heard.

Already done. Given that mine are Franken and Klobuchar, I don't think the mail delivers far enough up Obama's exhaust pipe for them to read it, let alone respond to it.

Agree 100%. These anti's consider this their best chance in a generation to gut the 2nd Amendment. If you've never bothered to contact your representatives this is the time to start. They ARE going to try to take away our guns.

They're already attacking our new Senator.

She was wishy-washy during the election.  I wouldn't be surprised if she would support the ban.  I didn't vote for her either way.

Have done so.
Have extended NRA membership(s)
Did'nt waste time contacting Mr. O'bama
Have extended requests for other gun-owners to do the same or more.

I'm proud to say my new Texas Senator, Ted Cruz, is pro-gun and pro-2A as well as my Congressman Rep. Louie Gohmert. If you have watched Sean Hannity lately you have seen Louie Gohmert on there.  8)

+1 on Senator Cruz

I did send him a letter asking him to continue supporting our 2nd amendment rights for law-abiding citizens.  He doesn't have a website yet.

Both John Cornyn and Ted Cruz got emails from me, as did my congressman, Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat who has been calling for stricter gun control laws. Hard to believe but yep, there actually are a few Dems here in Texas.

Better believe it.
Austin is in the process of passing a county bill to ban gun-shows  on city property.  It was also mentioned they are considering even on private land for the whole county.  Austin has a contract now for the Saxet Gunshow until 2014.

Contacted my Senator (Dick Durban) and Representative.  Got polite but negative response from the Senator (Durban) and no response from the Representative who is supposed to be a Gun Rights Supporting Republican.

Just found this link
http://www.assaultweapon.info/ (http://www.assaultweapon.info/)

Use the right arrow key to scroll through it all. I would like to send it to my reps but they will not accept links.
I am going to send it to everyone I can think of that does not know the difference.

Thank you for submitting your message to my U.S. Senate office.  Each week, several thousand Minnesotans send me their thoughts and suggestions on legislation and important issues facing our nation. So far, I have heard from 2/11 contacts.  They were pretty much form letters returned, but both said they would support RKBA.

My Mom in Montana has only heard from one, Testor.  His reply was very wishy-washy and could be viewed as positive by either side.

His reply was very wishy-washy

The three replies I recieved were basically Polititian speak! :   "Thank you very much,.... your comments will be considered... contact my office any time....."
In other words, it was NOT "You're right!  I'll oppose any and all weapons bans for U.S. citizens". :(

I got the same response from all My reps and the Republican gov. here in Ohio. No commitment either way.

Contacting my reps other than John Kasich, was a wast of time. One of the reps I have (to my shame) is the Leader of the House.
Here is his reply.

Dear James:

Thank you for contacting me.  I appreciate hearing from you.

The horror that took place in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 seems unbearable, but we will lock arms and unite as citizens, for that is how Americans rise above unspeakable evil.  Let us all come together in God's grace to pray for the families of the victims, that they may find some comfort and peace amid such suffering.  Let us give thanks for all those who helped get people to safety, and take heart from their example.

House Republicans join President Obama and all Americans in mourning the victims of this awful tragedy.  The president formed a task force headed by Vice President Biden. On January 16, 2013, the president announced his plan based on the task force's recommendations. House committees of jurisdiction will review these recommendations.  And if the Senate passes a bill, we will also take a look at that.  Right now our focus is, and should be, on the victims, their families, and their community.

Thank you again for contacting me with your thoughts.  Please don't hesitate to inform me of your concerns in the future.  To sign up for email updates, I invite you to visit my website at http://johnboehner.house.gov.

Sincerely,

John A. Boehner
Member of Congress

He normally sticks his finger in the wind to see which way it is blowing is blowing. So I figure we have some real problems heading our way.

Also be sure to keep an eye on your state and local politicians as well. In NH the new state legislature is just playing the game of trying to reverse everything the previous legislature did. We may be heading away from a stand your ground state.

Well at least i have gotten the hang of sending messages to ALL of my politicians. ::)

At least one TX Congressman shows some support.

Thank you for contacting me regarding federal firearms laws.  I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

As a strong proponent of the Second Amendment, I believe it is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's constitutional right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self-protection.  Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

It is encouraging that the Supreme Court has upheld the will of our Founders and re-affirmed the ideals our country was established upon.  The Supreme Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller provides a greater guarantee that Americans' Constitutional rights remain secure from federal government intrusion.  I was proud to sign an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in that case stating an individual?s right to bear arms is fundamental.  This historic ruling continues to have implications far beyond the District of Columbia.  In 2010, the Supreme Court decided in McDonald v. City of Chicago to strike down the arbitrary gun ban in Chicago?and thereby affirm that the Second Amendment safeguards against state and local encroachments on the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals.  Rather, we must focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes.  I believe that strictly enforcing the law?and meting out tougher sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes?will reduce crime more effectively than gun or equipment bans, which primarily serve to take firearms away from law-abiding citizens.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to protect our Second Amendment rights.  Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN

United States Senator

IMO John Cornyn, one of my Senators in DC, is pretty much an establishment Republican. I wonder if his strong pro-2A stance is truly his own or is he just scared of losing his job after the defeat of his establishment buddy David Dewhurst by the formerly unknown Tea Party candidate that beat Dewhurst and eventually won the other TX Senator seat -- Ted Cruz.
