Title: Which CZ should I get for my first? Tac Sport?
Post by: n16ht5 on January 31, 2013, 12:40:56 PM
Hello,

New here from Seattle area. Looking to get my first CZ in 9mm. I want one that I can carry as well as shoot competitively. I am heavily leaning to the Tactical Sport but the extended mag release looks like a problem. I really like the 5.4" barrel and adj trigger. I am not sure if I should stick to a regular CZ75 to carry though.
I have a Glock20 with a 6" Lone Wolf slide/bbl and a Fiveseven. I carry both regularly, as well as an XDm 9mm that I am looking to replace with a CZ.

There is a local CZ75b Stainless in unfired condition for sale locally for $750 second hand. I can't find anything right now new other than a Tactical Sport for $1100 new.

any input is appreciated.

Chris

The TS is a big freakin' hunk of metal!  It's designed for shooting games where its size is advantageous because of additional magazine capacity, longer barrel length, and single action only trigger.  It is also very wide.  Since it is all steel, it is significantly heavier than you 6" G20.  This gun was designed to be competitive in USPSA Limited/IPSC Standard divisions.  You would be hard pressed to find a better gun for competition use.

For CCW, however, it is BIG.  A standard CZ75 would suite you much better.  You've got DA/SA, can carry it Condition 1 or 2 with no worries, and have double strike capability.

great, thanks for the advice. I found this... he would trade it (unfired) with 2 bakelite mags and 60rds of 5.45 for my MAK90 straight cut. Seems like a good deal?

Well I got the CZ. Trigger pull is absolutely horrid. Going to research how to fix that. Wondering if I should have gone glock34...

If it is truely unfired...the trigger will most likely be very gritty.  It gets MUCH better with use.  If you choose to do a little smithing, it can be phenominal.

How handy are you and how comfortable are you with mechanical devices?

fairly comfortable. I have been looking around at the DIY trigger jobs.. doesn't look too bad. I might give it a try with some CGW parts thrown in. have a link to which you think is the best guide?

took it shooting the other day.. groups extremely well offhand :)

Got coco bolo grips on today:

I absolutely love those polished stainless CZ's...very classy.

CGW will hook you up with mods for a better trigger.  I used my bone-stock BD to good effect in our local matches, you won't be disappointed.

Honestly though I would have recommended a different model such as the P01.  It has more modern 'combat' features and carries nicely.  I get just as good scores with mine as with my BD, but a lot lighter.

That's a pretty nice first CZ, but I would have recommended the Shadow since you want it as a carry and a "gun games" pistol. The new accurized Shadows that the CZ Custom shop is building now look bleep special. SP-01 Shadow: http://czcustom.com/CZ-75-SP01-SHADOW-PolyCoat-9mm.aspx, new Accu-shadow: http://czcustom.com/cz75sp01accushadow.aspx.

Those look pretty nice. I think I am pretty happy with this beauty SS CZ though. I did some plinkin yesterday... I have a 12" plate at 70yds (just to left of hanging target), was hitting 3 out of 4 shots standing offhand. If I fix up the trigger a bit I should have a real nice performer.

I'm looking at fiber optic sights.. not sure which to go with...

Yeah, you got a good shooter, hell all the CZ's are good once you put enough rounds through them to smooth the trigger. The new ones with the Omega trigger feel wonderful out of the box, but it's almost strictly for the polymers (P07, P09).

For sights, have a look at Cajun Gun Works also. They sell a custom serrated rear with a Dawson front FO that I'm pretty fond of. Also have a nice LPA rear/ front FO set now too which must be new. Dave Milam is on these forums, you can probably look him up and ask him if you have specific questions about either set. http://cajungunworks.com/sights_and_sight_sets.html

The only drawback to these low rear sights is the proximity to the hammer. On my SP01 40, the hammer doesn't interfere, but like CZ Custom's website says, you may want to consider the race hammer or SA/DA competition hammer. Notice the Shadows both ship with those hammers which match well with the rear sight.

I'm liking my 75B special edition stainless. I found an Israeli holster like the blackhawk serpa that works well. It's big for conceal but in the great white north this time of year, no problems. If the trigger doesn't smooth out to your liking, there are sources here to get new hammer seer and spring kits that are top notch. Im a new shooter and steadily improving, iron sites and my vision are my difficulties now. The 75 is helping me to improve.

My CZ is off to CGW for a major overhaul. Should be nice... defensive package, SS hammer, night sights...

Hiya n16ht5 and thanks for starting the thread, sorry jumping in so late, but as a tactical sports, po-2, shadow, and 75b owner I think you made a good call, for your dual use needs. I'd be courious as you looked at czcustom and cajun gun works, what tipped the scales, as both operations do excellent work with cz's.
I'm wishing I could see the smile on your face after those first few dry fires when you meet your new trigger, kinda glad cz dosent have triggers like this on every gun out of the factory. It would take the fun out of making it our own,and we'd miss the cool folks that help us customize our cz's. Dont forget, we are eargerly awaiting your delivery, photos, and range visit results....Be well

Wow, forgot about this... I got my CZ back from Cajun. Got the whole works in defensive carry package with night sights. Pull is butter smooth now. POI changed a bit so I need to learn how to shoot it again unfortunately. Not sure why.. I'll post pics this weekend and a report

The polished SS sure is attractive.  Good choice on the CZ over the Glock. There is absolutely no comparison in triggers.  I've converted more than a few people to CZ's after I let them handle/shoot my 75 Shadow.  Mine was the first at the club and now there are 5,  with a 6th awaiting delivery.  They previously all shot one of the following: glock, m&p's, kimber, and Sig.

I love converting people. It always starts with the "hey what's that" stare from an aisle or two over. Then you notice the person checking it out and you know how the rest goes. Nobody has said "I don't like it" or "eh, I'll stick with my Sig". Everyone I let shoot my SP01's falls in love instantly. They just fit, and the 40 has a 3lb single action pull, which most people really like.

Personally, I like steel, I like to feel that the gun has a decent amount of weight in my hand. I don't carry, so I don't need anything light. Even if I did carry, it'd be a DW Valor bobtail. Still steel, but narrower and more compact.
