Was quite happy with my outing today. As per sir wobbs, I made up 20 of the 34.8 to get a few shots in before testing. At 100 yards, the four on the right are the first. Adjusted scope and shot the left most 3.....

Good times, time to test.
Still at 100 yards, I did the Optimal Charge Weight method( http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/ocw-load-recipes/4533485759 ) with 160gr FTX and more 2460 at 2.7". I guess these are 30-30 bullets? Nothing too special.

After that I moved the target to about 200 yards and shot more of the 165 amaxs. With such a light charge the bullet was dropping by about 3" and right by 3".../ shrug now I got a scope zeroed for a week load at 100 Yardz LOL.
I had 4 rounds left so I took a shot at the 500 yrd steel plate. First 2 I aimed at a dirt spot to see where I was hitting. Second shot missed, got it with the 4th :)
????????????????
Well nothing to really write home about. Groups might be tighter if I were better with a rifle. But I'm happy with this first test/fire forming session. The posted loads are low because I was using large rif magnum primers. No pressure signs except for one hard to extract case from the second lowest power loads....weirdly enough, I think that is the one that disappeared from the second target...either that or it went thru the same hole ;)
Fir the next batch I will retest that load and work up to 40gr.

About 80 yards BTW, too much cactus beyond that.

Well, the 34.8 grains give a nice group. One flyer >:( :'(!

firemoose! are you crimping the bullets in place?
-
Congrats !!
The 34.8 shows what the barrel can do, but the 34.2 may show more promise if you consider that those are first shots. The flat pattern is not by circumstance. That was position settling down, eyes getting adjusted to sights, no NPA, or some such. Bad patterning would be more random like a shot gun; IMHO those are far too flat.
Next time bring 10 rounds to fire just to get yourself bedded in before shooting for record. ;)

Good tip wobbly.
No crimp mkd.

firemoose. no crimp in a bolt action is good! i think more uniform groups are shot with shells that are not crimped. are you shooting a bolt action and if so how is the barrel bedded?

Hey FM:
Have you tried AA 2520 ?
It is developed for the 308 Round
I go through 8 lb Jugs like crazy, between my 308s and 7.62 NATO loads

Yes its a bolt action. Floated barrel with a pillar near front of chamber.

No. I just picked up the first thing available near me that I had data for. Ill look for it though.

free floating barrel is also good! i floated my 700 bdl from the lug all the way out and glass bedded the chamber. bought a new stock for it after 40 yrs the way it was and didn't like the pressure point bedding so i took it off and put it back in the old stock. i used imr 4895 most of the time and in latter years used some imr 4350. both worked well.

Got to get out and shoot finally. Had too many to list but here's the results, I'm happy with this data.
All shots are from a rest, 100 yards, using win LRM primers.
First target, scope was off by 2 inches, not sure why...

I like these bullets, got a few from a pay it forward thread. Came in an old hornady box labeled 180gr but they are actually 150gr that look a lot like my 147gr M80 pulls...

And I'm REALLY liking these 160gr FTX with 4895...hard to make a bad load Haha
