Title: Almost ready....
Post by: armoredman on April 14, 2013, 06:50:59 PM
The load has been developed, (55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint over 24.7 grains of H-335), the rifle has proven itself to be flawless, ( SA vz-58 5.56mm), and the ammo is ready, (90 rounds for 3, 30 round magazines), just need one...last...thing...a new hunting license. :) Well, that and a weekend day off I can go bunny busting with my buddies. I intend to use the vz-58 for rabbit and coyote, (if I can be persuaded to get up early enough to get 'yote!), and I think it will work wonders, iron sights.
One question comes up a lot - why so much ammo, why those magazines? Easy - no restrictions on magazine size for hunting in AZ any more, 30 rounders are all I have, might as well fill 'em up, and no, I don't plan on spraying the neighborhood - one aimed shot at a time. I also will be hunting in areas known for drug/human smuggling, and a spare full mag might be a real lifesaver. Hopefully I'll not need the two spares for anything but counterweights. :D
New hunting license will come as soon as I can afford it... ;)

Have successfully hunted Coyotes with my AR15A2, Ruger Mini-14, and a single-shot H&R Heavy Barrel Handi-Rifle.  Coyotes will sometimes be around in packs or groups.  The more Ammunition available, the better!  The Single Shot Handi-Rifle proved to be a handi-cap (pun intended), although very very accurate, and I did kill one with it, and only one, out of three available.

Coyotes up here, are very routinely hunted with AR15's in their various configurations, and a Vz58 or AK47 would not be considered unusual. I've even seen M1 Garands and M1A's used on them.  Currently, I favor my accurized Ruger Mini-14, using a CCI Speer 52 grain FB-JHP or BT-JHP on top of H335 or W748.  We have no Magazine Capacity Restrictions for Coyotes and other Varmints.

As for Bunny Busting, I've no experience with your Arizona Jack-Rabbits, which are a heartier breed than our local Mid-West Cotton-Tails, where a .22LR or .22 Magnum will usually suffice, and distances are usually only a paltry 50 yards, on average. However, I expect your 5.56mm Vz58 will do the job very nicely, but I would recommend some optics.

AZ Game and Fish call AZ jack rabbits Arizona's original fast food. Seriously, that's on the website. ;) They can get big enough for the ears to reach my waist.
We used to have a 5 round limit for semi-autos, but that went bye bye in 2010. 8) I haven't gotten out to hunt coyote yet, but they are a pest that needs controlling. Jack rabbit I can at least eat. :)
